P5 Class Blog 2021-2022

Welcome to the P5 class blog!

Week ending 27/05/22

Another week has gone by. Can you believe it!

Lots happening as usual...

In Volume, we were first counting cm cubes, and then using the formula lxbxh to calculate how much shapes would hold. WITH calculators!!! Oooooh!

We were looking at different categories of adverbs. Ones involving the time and the place an action happens. Like 'yesterday' and 'outside.' All part of the adverb family.

For a treat, and only because they begged me if they could do it, they tidied their trays!

We drew maps of the school inspired by a feature on orienteering in Charlotte Holmes...

We got the sand and the lining of the pond in as well.

Lovely, mucky fun! Have a super weekend!

Week ending 20/05/22

Fun with volume on Tuesday. Difficult to get the exact amount!

We were trying to do self portraits. We have already done the 'half a face thing...

We are trying to get the face proportions right!

Enjoy your weekend!!!

Week ending 13/05/22

We have been doing some Charlotte Holmes inspired activities this week. Making periscopes...

Having a go at cat's cradle...

Yo yos too...

We were planting potatoes....

And doing a cool experiment with Miss Macdonald...

Have a super weekend!

Week ending 29/04/22

So much going on this week! I'll try to keep it brief...

We were sharing our stories of the weekend with each other by doing an activity called Think/Pair/Share. The children walk about to the music with their hands raised. When the music stops, they have to link with someone and tell their news.

We had to fill in a survey about our school. Answering the questions...what's working/what's not/evidence of this/what can we do? The Pupil Council reps took our results to Mrs K.

We were trying to find an object or objects from the school grounds that weighed exactly a kilo.

Then we were making Mrs Mirfield's Welsh cakes using our rations!

We fried them up on Thursday, and they were seriously delicious! Thanks the Welsh!

We also went out and started replanting our plants.

Finally, the children were working in groups to try and do some very accurate weighing.

Have a super weekend!

Week ending 22/04/22

We are back for the wonderful Summer Term - my favourite. I'll upload an overview of what we will be covering next week, but in the meantime, there was a lot going on this week!

We did a bit of revision of line symmetry to start off the week. One line first of all, then two.

We did a fun activity using logic and communication. We called it a Monkey Puzzle, and the second time you had to get untangled in complete silence!

We made a pond! In an afternoon! It just shows you that many hands make light work. Incredible! Ava B gets the strongest person in the class prize for carrying that stone all the way from the willows! Callan was champion root smasher, and Ethan and Tom were brilliant and very hard-working diggers!

Finally today we did Competitive problem Solving. Well done to Alex and Ben for being first to complete the puzzle!

Week ending 01/04/22

Week ending 25/03/22

Gardening fun this week and last. Firstly we were continuing to plant the seeds from Morrisons.

One of the beds has yellow and blue flowers, to hopefully show support for Ukraine!

Next we planted our different types of sunflower and some remaining herbs.

Some people were working harder than others!!!

To improve our grasp of French families we played Happy Families...

And then attempted a very challenging puzzle using perimeter and metre.

Here's hoping Tuesday's weather is as fab as it has been all this week... Suzann from Abriachan says there are undercover options for eating and gathering together, but for the trails we need to wear sensible clothes especially footwear. I think it may be cold. (Even snow!)

Don't forget to give the children a sizeable couple of snacks, there will be burgers of course, and a huge thank you goes to Mrs Dunning for the smores kit she sent in for all of the class!

Can't wait!!!!

Last week's Blog post will be incorporated in a link for our Open Morning. It will be posted on Wednesday.

Week ending 04/03/22

We started off the week with a cool spelling game. I would say the meaning of the homophone and collectively the class had to try to get the correct spelling. Kayleigh was loving it as you can tell!

We saw a World Book Day event that was broadcast from the show Matilda. Famous authors and illustrators told us about their work. They also put on musical performances. We watched, and drew along with the show. It was fascinating!

Miss Macdonald came in on Wednesday to see how we were working with our Martys. We did competitions that involved using the colour cards, the manual controller and block coding. We are going to have the 'Big Competition!' next week.

Lastly but far from leastly (!) we had World Book Day  itself. Lots of book and language related activities...including Murder in the Library!!!

We were visited by a mysterious but very beautiful person. She insisted on keeping her hat on, and she would not take off her gloves! Read 'The Witches,' to find out more...

Have a wonderful weekend!

Week ending 25/02/22

A short week but lots packed in and finished off. N.B. no spelling homework this week as they are difficult so the short week is not enough. I hope everyone is getting on well with their project!

We have been working on Information Handling and Statistics this past wee while. The children will be bringing home their work for you to see. I was very cruel and made them do a particularly complex comparative line graph! Hee hee...

Next we were working on persuasive letters. The children had to write a heartfelt plea to a person or an institution, to try to get them to change their ways! We used the P6 chromebooks, to make our letters look official!

In art we have been looking at portraits by famous artists. We drew some eyes with help from a Youtube tutorial!

We finished off the week with a French number game. The numbers were from 71 to 82. Very tricky and a bit dangerous as they are so keen and competitive!

Week ending 11/02/22

We are horsing through the term! I hope you all have extracted the note about our trip to Abriachan from bags.

It will be a great day out. A super idea from our very own Eco Group! And a terrific fundraising effort!

Here is what we've been up to this week...

We had a look at how to sort out 'Raw Data' by collecting leaves from the playground, and trying to sort them out.

Then we put all the info into a frequency table.

The children had to do their own survey after that.

It was Safer Internet day on Tuesday. We've been doing scenario discussions around this, using games and quizzes, for most of the week. Lots of interesting talk!

I hope you have a fab weekend!

Week ending 04/02/22

Plenty of things afoot as usual. Please read on...!

Our Martys were being moved round hand-drawn mazes using coding. Really tricky, so we'll do it for a couple of weeks!

The Little Robots turned out so cute! We are making a HWB ad campaign with them. 'I am NOT a robot!' More of that next week.

We are welcoming the fabulous people from Scottish Opera in March, so we are furiously learning all the songs.

This week was National Storytelling week. Each day (forgot on Thursday...) I have read the children a story. The final one was a strange story called, "The Monkey's Paw." It's a famous story by W.W. Jacobs. I read it to them with the lights off, and a roaring YouTube fire on. Then the children acted it out. With their very own ipad/chromebook fires!!!

Have a great weekend!

Week ending 28/01/22

Lots of lovely activities this week to talk about.

We made clay objects as a practice for making clay robots. We painted and varnished them...

....and then made some robots with lots of metal parts! They are very cute!

We were learning how to use compasses by drawing a flower pattern.

Some managed even bigger ones!

The display moves when you turn the flowers.

It was lovely to see you at the parent/teacher interviews. If you missed this, I am available any time on Google Teams for a chat about your child's progress. Just get in touch!

Thanks.

Week ending 21/01/22

Can't believe we are nearing the end of January already. Where does time go?

We have been working on consolidating all we have been learning about 2D shape, 3D shape and angles, using lots of fun resources!

We also enjoyed racing the Martys to see who was the fastest. The controllers were quite easy to move, but the Martys were hard to keep on course. They definitely have a mind of their own! Follow the links below for MUCH hysteria...

Please find below the Termly Overview for this term.

See you on the Parents' Nights!

Week ending 14/01/22

What a very busy first full week back!

Every day we are trying to do the 'Daily 4 (times 2!)

It helps to upkeep skills we've been learning.

We have also been working with our robot friends using the coloured card coders. They have colour sensors on their feet.

Lots of lovely 2D shape work...

...and we played the game we call 'The Noisy Game' which is very good for improving tables, but not so good for ma heid!

Have a lovely weekend!

We're back!!!!!!

A big push to Easter with lots to do.

Our new project involves these wee characters!

We have Monkey...

Twinkle Toes...

Big Bertha...

Dave...

...and Bob the Builder.

We will be programming these competitive robots to see who will win the league!

More to follow!

Our final blog of 2021!

What a year. Below you'll find some photos of activities from the final weeks of learning.

A HUGE thank you to all those of you who donated towards our Trek to the North Pole! Some people nearly actually DID go to the North Pole with their super efforts!

Please stay safe over the holidays, and thank you for all the good wishes and support. I am overwhelmed by your kind gifts, and am delighted to say, that my 'Problem Area' will be getting a bit of a doing this Christmas. Quite right!

Firstly we did a Christmas Quiz. Do you know the answers?

Then we had some educational fun with the ipads.

There were Christmas activities for the last few days.

We had to design a Christmas jumper from a Lochardil sweatshirt for the terrific Broom House Captains' Sweatshirt Fashion Show.

Some cool board games were fun to play on the last day, although I can find myself getting a tiny bit too competitive.....

Merry Christmas from P5!

First we wrote some of the essay......

Then we did a desk drumming workout.....

Then we wrote some more...

Then we did a Joe Wickes workout...

Then we wrote some more...!

We practised our dance.

Finally we looked at plurals with a y!

Have a great weekend!

We are SO glad to be back together!!!!!

It has been such a pain being off and so lovely to be back! I can't tell you how many teachers have said to me that I should be proud of my wonderful class! They were superb. Not one complaint about one thing. They're a fabulous bunch. Thank you to all parents and carers for your support.

We have a lot to finish off and so much to get done! The CRM and MMM  roses have been getting a contrasting background this week...

Sadly we have finished our sessions with Gillian from Feis Rois. She has such a gorgeous voice we could have listened to her all day. And she taught us some super songs.

We were talking about stereotypes in Health and Wellbeing this week. The children had to draw a 'scientist' and then discuss whether this somewhat limited idea of a scientist is actually true in reality!

We are also writing a piece of imaginative text for you to read at home!

More Fun today at Beat the Goalie. Thank you P6 for arranging it for us.

Friday 19/11/21

Thank you so much for all the donations to Children in Need. Here are the children dressed down and getting ready to join Joe Wicks in his special exercise class. Don't be alarmed! The children didn't faint with exhaustion at the end. They were winding down with some mindfulness activities.

What a fun day I had in P5 today. Thankfully the bad weather held off and in the afternoon we went searching for natural materials to make our name.

We are delighted to welcome you to the p5 weekly blog!

We will be posting after the October holidays every week with all that happens in primary 5.

Here is the link to our virtual book about the first term.

The Glasgow Rose

Inspired by our project about Margaret and Charles Rennie Macintosh, we are painting Margaret's stylised rose. This rose has become a symbol of art nouveau design all over the world.

Our show is getting underway!

John Hector and Nathan K are being helped by Kayleigh to make up choreography to one of the songs.

The costumes group are looking for cool clothes.

The props group are having a discussion about where to get the things we need for our show.

The scenery group are drawing their ideas!

Mrs K is still keeping up the reading skills though!

Please stay safe on bonfire night!

BLOG for 29/10/21

     P5 Show!

We will be doing a fabulous show of some sort for our topic this term. The reason I say, 'of some sort,' is that we haven't written it yet!

I love to do shows that are ENTIRELY done by the children. They do the writing of the script, the scenery and props, the choreography and music choices and the filming and editing.

We have started the choreography!

    Hallowe'en!

Dress up or down on Hallowe'en........

Hallowe'en Mystery!

The children had to work their way through 9 different activities to gather the clues, to solve the mystery....

Some very tricky...some not so tricky!

THE SOLUTION!

The clues are an anagram of RED BOX, as well as the combination to open it up!

Inside......MEGA TREATS! Sorry I mean a healthy snack of course!

I will be uploading the termly overview onto this site next Friday. Have a great weekend!
