P5A Class Blog 2022-2023

No updates at the moment as I have been writing reports!!!! back soon!

Africa!!!!

WE DID IT!

Thanks to lovely family and friends, the amazing netballers and my fantastic class, we have managed to raise over £1,500!

First the netball team did a marathon netball match, which killed off any enthusiasm for netball I think...BUT they persevered and they did it! Then we performed Macbeth the Musical and received a load of very kind donations. We are still doing Africa Fun Fun! Week, and we have gone over the total. The cakes for this are making just as much as the entrance fee, so a massive thank you to all the people who made delicious things.

We are going to work out what the excess is, and try to buy some lightweight equipment for the African school, such as pencil sharpeners (which are apparently like hen's teeth) and pencils, if that is alright with everyone. Any ideas for light things I can carry on the plane with me are most welcome.

Thank you again. I really can't thank you all enough.

Mrs P

Beautiful May!

Lovely weather coming our way any day now! Actually we had half an hour of sunshine for the picnic. Lucky!

I set the children the Teeny Tiny Challenge this week. They had to find things in the garden of these given lengths. The catch was that they weren't allowed to use a ruler. The biggest one was 25 mm... You can see how HUGE some of these guesses were! Hee hee!

We made bunting for the 5th May picnic celebration...

We tried the Teeny Tiny Challenge again, but this was after we did some work on millimetres and centimetres. MUCH better!

We are in the middle of the children's talks...

And we are busy painting the scenery for our show, as well as all the rest...

Finally, we had a super picnic on Friday! Thank you for making it such a beautiful, bright day. The children look amazing!

Have Super Coronation Weekend!

The busiest yet!

Loads happening this week...

I'll attach my Termly Overview here for you to see.

Termly Overview Term 4

The children heard the story of Le Petit elephant in French, skillfully acted by myself...

The Apples reading group were testing out hidden messages written in milk and lemon juice...

Whilst the Bananas were seeing how long it took for your fingers to turn wrinkly in water. 15 minutes!

We are making banners for our stalls...

...and today we revised with maths games. Good fun!

Last Term!

There is a lot to get done in this lovely summer term. I will post a termly overview next week, but in the meantime, here are a couple of things we did this week.

Mrs Murray ran a Daily Mile with the children...

We primped up our posters for the Africa Fun Fun day...

And made names, mottoes, animals and food to represent our groups.

Have a fab weekend!

The holidays at last!

We have been finishing off lots of loose ends this week like the final chapter of Charlotte Holmes, and all the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory comparisons. That was really fun seeing the interpretations on film, compared with the book!

We didn't manage to get the p7 activities done on actual Red Nose Day, so we had a go at them on Monday.

Then we made elephants!

We were then able to do the moment we'd all been waiting for ....making the chocolate! A huge thanks to Mrs H for helping this to be as good as it was!!!!

Today the children showed the rest of the class the work they had been doing as a follow up to their reading tasks.

Have a fabulous holiday!

Blog for a busy week!

Thank you so much for the incredible work that has been put into the projects. The children are, rightly, very proud of them. We will be preparing talks about their projects for the final term.

In maths we were using angle machines to help us work on compass directions.

We were coding with Tim's tiny robots for Science Week...

Multiplying by 10 and 100, and even 1000, is more complicated if you are dealing with a decimal. We use these number flippers to help!

We've also started posters for the African Fundraising day that we are planning to hold next term. They look fabulous so far.

Finally, we made red noses for Red Nose Day. Interesting modelling girls!

I think that's it! Have a great weekend!

Freezing weather but lots of FUN!

Loads of work this week, and lots of active learning too!

We were using protractors again this week, but this time for actually helping us to DRAW an angle, rather than just measuring it.

A group of the children's reading book was about Coral Reefs, so they made a fabulous underwater scene...

We have been making adverts for our chocolate products. Even Pinky got involved! The monkey has more/better clothes than I do...

We were looking at angles, direction and compass points in maths, so we went outside and made a grid. The children had to direct each other around the grid. It was a lot of fun, but bitterly cold!

Have a SUPER weekend!

March already!

Book day was a lot of fun as the children moved around the school doing book related tasks. Some children dressed up!

Lexie as Trunchbull was truly terrifying!

Miss Irvine gave the children some exciting drama opportunities ...

...and we were lucky to have a visit from Feis Rois again. This time we are doing traditional songs and movement games.

Lots of activities and learning...

We have a rhyme game you can do with a partner and it helps you to remember the French alphabet...

The Cucumber Reading Group have been doing experiments with Miss Irvine. This ones shows how light reacts when you shine it through water.

We play a cool tables game called KABOOM!

And we play the spelling game Nessy. It is very cool!

The 'Loop Cards' are very tricky.

But the 'Noisy Game' is exactly like its name!

Finally, we have been looking at comparison line graphs and having a wee go ourselves. You'll see what the children have done, as this is the assessment task that will be sent home in March.

Hope you have a fab February break!

A 'mathsy' time this week...

On Monday we searched out leaves from around the playground, and tried o sort them out. We used terms like 'Raw Data' and 'Frequency table.'

Miss Irvine helped the children with addition and subtraction facts using a resource called 'Target Boards.'

Some children were playing a game that involved division. Thank goodness for the division boards. They really help!

Have a lovely weekend!

Thank you so much for coming along to Parents Evenings. It was so lovely to see you!

We continued with 3D shape this week, and the children learned the best way to make a 3D shape using the 'hit one, miss one' method for putting tabs on the net of the shape. They did a great job!

We were tasting lovely chocolate again this week...any excuse...to see if there was much difference between Fairtrade and ordinary chocolate?

And finally, a very warm welcome to Miss Irvine who has come to help in our class for the next six weeks. Lovely to have you with us!

Enjoy your weekend!

Help ma boab! This was a LOOOOONG week, with many fabulous activities!

We had lovely Lisa from Feis first thing on Monday, who was teaching us traditional Scots songs and games.

We were practising how to colour using coloured pencils by drawing a dragons eye. They look spooky!

Now that the weather is milder we're out learning the many rules of netball...

And making beautiful circle patterns using a pair of compasses.

Have a fabulous weekend!

Busy Week!

Lots of shenanigans this week, never mind the snow day! I will attach the Termly Overview here, and also on the Google Classroom. Please book an appointment for your Parent/Teacher interview at Parent Booking

We looked at where chocolate came from on a map of the world, and discovered the atmospheric and climactic conditions that are perfect for growing chocolate.

On Monday we were delighted to have Lisa from Feis Rois come in and teach us about the accordion and some traditional Gaelic songs.

We have been looking at properties of 2D shapes in maths this week...

And discovering that there are a LOT of right angles in our classroom thanks to our handy right angle testers!

The Termly Overview should attach below. Have a great weekend!

Termly Overview Term 3

Welcome back!

This is the long term where we get a lot of work done. I will be attaching the Termly Overview on Friday as usual, but right now, I'll let you see some of our activities on this first week back.

The new topic for this term is based around CHOCOLATE! So we were looking at where it comes from, and if it was easy to tell the difference between dark, milk and white. Turns out....it is! But the results might be different when we take away the sense of smell?? We'll try that next!

The children have been illustrating their Festive holiday fun in a cartoon format this week...

We are still enthusiastically working away on Macbeth, so we sorted out who is going to be who today.

We also practised the battle scene.

In maths we are moving on to looking at shape. The children are drawing pictures with some 2D shapes and naming them.

Have a lovely weekend!

What a lot of Christmassy Fun!

I thought I'd wait till our party to blog the photos from last week.

We made beautiful snowflakes for the ceiling of the class...

They look very wintery when they're finished.

Next contractions, like 'isn't' and 'should've' were the order of the day. Some are easy...some are hard!

Lots of reading involved in this part of the second Charlotte Holmes mystery...

We worked on looking at the different words used, and the traditions at Christmas time in France, as well as talking about the traditions in our own household too.  We had to check with good old Google Translate!

Finally, our party!

What a lot of FUN! The children were excellent dancers! They only PRETEND to hate social dancing. Hee hee!

Actually they did one of the best Dashing White Sergeants I've ever seen for young children!

Thank you so much for all the goodies.

We have so much left that we're going to have another feast before everything goes out of date!

IT'S CHRIIIIIIIISTMAAAAAAAAS!

Finally we can let loose on Christmas! Yay!

We had lots of work to do on measure this week. Working with balance and spring loaded scales. At the end of the week, the children were all experts in weighing, so they could be trusted to make bread and butter pudding! Yum!

It was fun to do and delicious!

We made some jolly snowmen too!

Please come along to our Open Morning next week. We are getting ready for you...

Have a fabulous weekend!

A week full of song, film and dance!

We were Morris Dancing courtesy of Charlotte Holmes this week. You can learn too via: www.charlotteholmes.co.uk/dance

it was really fun!

We also did Heads, shoulders, knees and toes .....in French! Tricky....

Decimals were fabulous and amazing this week. Nicola did a beutiful job of representing decimals using chocolate bars. Sadly not real ones...

We did some work on blending pastels this week too. they look good enough to eat!

We had a super trip to Eden Court. Thank you so much to all our helpers!

Have a lovely weekend!

Another busy week...

We are even further into our investigations in Charlotte Holmes and there are clues everywhere. Even the dot-to-dots are giving us some answers!

Johnson the chauffeur was sending signals in morse code to Alice!

But on Friday we learned why! It's true LOVE!

24 Hour Time has been the main maths topic this week, and an introduction to delightful decimals.

Our pictures were on display at a council function, and we got a mention in a press release. You have to scroll down a bit. Well done P5!

November romping past!

I think it's my age, but this term seems to be flying past! Here are a few things we did this week...

We were making pictures of the witch's house from Narnia. (Secretly we were having a go at applying glitter properly...without too much spillage, before glitter season begins!!!)

Then we were outside with a teacher who played cool games in the hall and the MUGA.

And finally, we were learning card games from Charlotte Holmes, that required us to listen very carefully to instructions!

Thank you for having a look at our week!

Welcome back!

It was a lovely break but seems so long ago now! I've finished the Termly Overview and will add it at the end of this week's update.

We picked up a lot of litter when we walked down to swimming last week. It was an interesting exercise!

Suffice to say we were all absolutely puggled by the time we got back.

We washed the trash...

And now we are working on making a large display for COP27, to be displayed in the Town House.

The Termly Overview will let you know some of the things we will be learning this term.

Termly Overview Term 1

Another busy week...

The children were gutted to learn that, because I don't give out homework the first and last weeks of term, there wouldn't be any this week. I think you could hear the cheer in Nairn! Beg as they might, I'm not giving them any. Hee hee...

Lots of fun activities this week. We were doing more of our work on symmetry. This time drawing the other half of shapes...

...revising colours in French with a colours race...

...making up more dance moves...

...strengthening our 4 times tables skills...

...making up an assault course for Marty...

and finally, some Desk Drumming to give us some exercise!

Can't wait to meet some of you on our Open House day.

Have a super weekend!

Maths, champions and dancing!

We have been looking at symmetry this week. Some busy children and some nice, neat jotters...

Making up our 'Confidence' dance was a lot of fun. We hope to show you on the Open Day....if we feel confident enough!

There have been some lovely achievements posted on the live stream of our classroom, but here are some other achievements from other children too.

More Shenanigans!

As we get further into the term, the more fun things we are doing!

This week we experimenting with changing the mood, purely with wonderful adjectives. Here are the two VERY different moods, created by using the same basic text, but changing and enhancing the adjectives...

One mood is sinister...the other joyful! Can you guess which one is which?

We were boxing up the shapes of the spelling words to see if the shape of the word would help us to remember them better.

We decided to make a display all about Marty the robot. First we made sad robots using different grades of pencil, and watching shading tutorials.

Next we will be cutting out and outlining our colourful robots that we painted this week.

More Marty fun this week. We made him go round a maze using purely the colour cards and a colour reader/sensor on his foot.

Then the children drew mazes for each other.

Then all the Martys had a race!!!! That was NOT a quiet experience as passions ran very high!

Finally we have been working on Problem Solving in maths. The Sultan and the Vizier. It's an ancient problem. Can you work it out???

If a chessboard were to have a grain of rice placed upon each square such that one grain were placed on the first square, two on the second, four on the third, and so on (doubling the number of grains on each subsequent square), how many grains of wheat would be on the chessboard at the finish?

Thank you for reading about our busy week!

A fun week in P5

We have been eating even MORE Turkish Delight! Very kindly donated by Grace's mum. This time the real thing! I think it went down better than the Frys one....Strange!

We were playing some cool spelling games this week.

And we were playing a competitive game with cards to practise our 2 times table. VERY NOISY!

Some children brought in things to show us too. Nicola brought her upcycled teddy, Finn brought all his medals for rugby and cycling and Struan brought his collection of very cool sea monsters that he made himself! Have a great weekend folks!

What a busy week!

Such a lot to talk about this week. I'll attach the Termly Overview first so you can read all about the exciting weeks ahead. I'll try to attach it, but there is also a link below. It will also be in the Google Classroom, where it might open a bit easier for you.

Termly Overview Term 1

We picked our Class Representatives for the year.

Health Promoter

Unikid

JRSO (Junior Road Safety Officer)

Pupil Council

and ECO schools

We were looking at BIG numbers and using the Prentice Patented Numberator to help us out!

This week we picked group reading books too.

We thought of 'juicy' adjectives for a a 'mood' exercise...

And we painted some lovely montbretia flowers...you know the ones that take over your garden at this time of year...

Finally we met with our friend Marty the Robot. Lots more to come from him!

Have a fantastic weekend!

We're back!!!!

What an amazing week we've had, just getting to know each other. Every week I'll put some photos, and explanations as to what's going on in them(!), here on the blog.

I'll post our Termly Overview next week, but in the mean time, please could the children bring their gym clothes on a Thursday.

I put up some homework for this week on Google Classroom. They have one week to try to get it done. It's due in on Thursday 25th August. It's not much this week, mostly educational games as it is only the first week, but remind them to hit 'hand in' or it will come up that they haven't done it.

I'm attaching some photos from Fun 31 this week. We have this time on a Friday to relax and have some fun for 31 minutes, just as it says in article 31 of the Rights of the child. Clever!

Nice teeth Luke!

Have a super weekend!
