Our Adventure to Eden Court!
We had an amazing trip to Eden Court where we got to listen to the beautiful sounds of the Scottish Royal National Orchestra. They took us on a fun adventure, teaching us all about climate change and the sounds of the ocean. It was such a cool experience, and we learned a lot! We also did a great job walking there and back. Well done, everyone – you were awesome!
Our Awesome Roman Soldier Craft!
This week in class, we traveled back in time to Ancient Rome! We learned all about the Roman soldiers, their armor, and how they helped the Roman Empire grow so big. And guess what? We even made our very own Roman soldiers! Here’s how we did it.
What Did Roman Soldiers Wear?
Roman soldiers, called legionaries, wore special armor to protect themselves in battle. They wore a metal helmet, a red tunic, and a shield. Their armor was made of metal and leather, and they carried swords called gladii. Roman soldiers were very strong and brave, and they worked together to protect their empire.
Celebrating Chinese New Year with Our Class!
Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival, is one of the most exciting holidays in China! This year, we celebrated with lots of fun activities, stories, and yummy treats. Let’s take a look at how we celebrated!
What is Chinese New Year?
Chinese New Year is a time to celebrate new beginnings. It marks the start of the lunar calendar, which is based on the moon. Each year is named after an animal from the Chinese zodiac. This year, it’s the Year of the Snake! The snake symbolizes wisdom, beauty, and calm energy. People born in the Year of the Snake are said to be thoughtful, wise, and charming.
Delicious Chinese New Year Food: No celebration is complete without food! We tried some traditional Chinese dishes:
Dumplings – These little pockets of deliciousness are shaped like gold coins and represent wealth for the new year.
Noodles – Long noodles symbolize a long life, so we made sure to slurp them up!
Mandarin Oranges – These are sweet and round, representing good fortune.
Fun Facts About Chinese New Year:
Red is lucky! People decorate with red banners, lanterns, and clothes because red is a color that brings good luck.
Fireworks! At midnight, fireworks light up the sky to scare away bad luck and bring in good fortune.
Family time: Chinese New Year is all about family. People visit relatives, enjoy big meals, and celebrate together.
Dragon Dance: People perform the dragon dance in parades. The dragon is carried by many dancers and moves in a fun, wavy way to bring happiness and luck.
Celebrating Robert Burns in Primary 3/4
Last week, P3/4 celebrated the life and legacy of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. We learned all about his fascinating life, his famous works, and how his poems and songs are still loved and sung around the world today.
One highlight of our celebrations was Addressing the Haggis—we even got to taste some! Some of us were brave and gave it a try for the first time!
We also explored music and poetry, learning to play My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose on the fiddle. We were proud to lead the school assembly, where we recited the poem with confidence.
To end the assembly on a high note, Paige wowed everyone with an incredible Highland sword dance, showing off her amazing Highland dancing skills.
It was a week full of fun, culture, and creativity as we honored the Bard of Scotland!
We practised saying, stretching, building words and using them in sentences! We had a fantastic time in pairs and groups playing a word sorts game! Everyone sorted words into the correct sounds and it was a real hoot! Such great teamwork all around!
Celebrating National Penguin Day with Gloria the Penguin!
On Monday, we celebrated National Penguin Day in P3/4 with a fun challenge: estimating and measuring the height of our class penguin, Gloria!
This term, we’re learning all about measurement, including how to use rulers, meter sticks, and the best tools for measuring different objects. For Gloria, we needed to figure out her height, length, width, and even her wingspan!
After some great discussions, we decided the meter stick was the best tool for the job. To make it easier to measure, we carefully laid Gloria flat on the ground and used the meter stick to check her size.
It was a fantastic way to practice our measuring skills while celebrating a special day. Plus, we had so much fun working together! 🐧
How and why were Roman Roads built?
Why did the Romans build roads?
We were imagining we were soldiers and needed to get to places very quickly and safely. The Romans built roads so their soldiers, messengers, and people could travel easily. It helped them get from one town to another without getting lost or stuck in the mud. It also helped them trade things like food and goods between places!
The day P3/4 became Roman road builders!
How did they build the roads?
The Romans were like road-building superheroes! They wanted their roads to be strong and last a long time. Here’s how they did it:
Planning: First, they picked the shortest and easiest route, even if that meant cutting through forests or digging through hills. They wanted the road to be as straight as possible!
Digging: They dug a trench (a big hole) where the road would go.
Layers: The road wasn’t just dirt—it was like a cake with layers!
At the bottom, they put big stones to make it strong.
Then they added smaller stones or gravel.
Finally, they put flat stones or smooth gravel on top, so it was nice and even.
Ditches: On the sides, they made little ditches (like tiny canals) to drain rainwater so the road wouldn’t get muddy.
Finishing Touch: They made the surface super smooth so people, horses, and carts could travel easily.
This week in class, we've had a blast exploring multiplication strategies! We’ve been using think boards to tackle number problems, focusing on repeated addition, groupings, skip counting, and arrays. To wrap it up, we split into teams for a lively multiplication relay race. Learning can be so much fun!
We practised saying, stretching, building words and using them in sentences! We had a fantastic time in pairs and groups playing a word sorts game! Everyone sorted words into the correct sounds and it was a real hoot! Such great teamwork all around!
When the snow came out to play, we had a brilliant snow day at school! The children had a fabulous time sliding down the school hill, laughter ringing through the air.
One of our New Year activities was making a calendar. We revised the seasons, matched colours, noted important dates, and discussed how we’ll use our calendars throughout the year.
This new year, let's chat about our goals! What do you want to learn, achieve, or try? Share your ideas with the class and let's inspire each other!
