Last week we found out that the Royal Mail have released a new batch of stamps themed around Myths and Legends. We were inspired by this to design our own stamps with mythical creatures that we created. We then wrote character descriptions and used AI to generate a picture of the characters we created. It was really interesting to see just how detailed we needed our descriptions to be.
We also wrote some Thank You letters to the visitors that came to our class for career week and shared with them what we learned. As an extension to careers week, On Wednesday, we had Lorna Steele come in, talking about her job role and the Archive center.
In art, with Mrs Johnstone, we were inspired by the spring to create some cherry blossom artwork using water colours on black paper to create a misty effect… it’s perfect for a windy springtime sky behind twisting cherry blossom branches! With shades of pink and white, the blossoms really pop! Painting with watercolour on black paper felt so magical as the paints and water started to dry, revealing that soft, dreamy look! Focusing just on the branches was good for creative confidence! Instead of stressing over drawing a whole tree we could focus on the detail and movement of the blossoms.

We are going to be learning about how to write persuasively. Mrs Johnstone read us the story of The Grinch and we thought about all the reasons why he hates Christmas. Over the next few weeks we are going to be working on writting an arguement to pesuade The Grinch that Christmas is a great time of year. We started by looking at the structure of paragraphs in persuasive writing and it was all about OREOs (not the biscuits) :
O - opinion
R - reason
E - evidence
O - opinion
We practised writing a persuasive paragraph thinking about some of the reasons why we like Christmas.

WOW, We have had a very busy week this week!
On Monday, we learned about the origins of Armistice Day and the reasons that we have a 2 minute silence at 11am on the 11th November each year. Mrs Johnstone had been given some information and photographs by the Archive Centre that told the stories of some people from Inverness, during WW1. We saw some extracts from local school records that gave us an insight into how the lives of children were affected during WW1 and WW2 and we thought about how lives of children and families around the world are affected by wars today. We learned the poem “In Flanders Fields” and enjoyed created our own black out poems, highlighting some key lines and imagery from the poem. You can see some of our examples below.
We have been exploring the book "The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse" in HWB with Mrs Johnstone and thinking about words of wisdom and our favourite quotes. We made our own pages to add to the book with some important messages to share. Have a look a few of our examples in the pictues.
In maths this week we have been looking at fractions with Mrs Johnstone and continuing shape with Mrs Cameron. On Monday and Tuesday we began to learn about simplifying fractions by finding the highest common factor and applied our “fair fractions” rule meaning that we have to divide the numerator and denominator by the highest common factor in order to simplify eg: 12/24 (hcf / 2) = ½. Some children were also learning to convert fractions to percentages eg 1/5 = 20/100 = 20%. In shape we have been learning about the nets of different 3D shapes this week and have enjoyed making our own 3D shapes. We are beginning to increase our confidence in differentiating between the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
With Mrs Johnstone we have been building our skills for writing. We learned about the importance of commas and made our own funny sentences to show just how important a comma could be. Here are some examples. Can you see the problem?
Let’s eat Grandma. VS Let’s eat, Grandma.
I like cooking my family and animals. VS I like cooking, my family, and animals.
We also learned about “show, don't tell description” to add more detail and depts to our writing and and the role of different parts of speech including:
Nouns = People, Places and Things
Verbs = action words
Adverbs = describe an action
Adjective = describes a noun
We are working towards writing our own creative, descriptive stories that we will share with you. With Mrs Cameron, we started to plan our final recount of everything we have completed for the 60th celebrations happening soon!
On Tuesday afternoon we had an unannounced fire drill. Our class were all very mature and responsible and managed to follow procedures to get out of the building safely, setting a great example to the younger children.
We had our Into Film visit to the cinema on Thursday which was excellent and the children represented the school really well. Thank you to all the parent helpers who came along to support. We all enjoyed Harold and the purple crayon and in the afternoon the children enjoyed some follow up activities including code crackers and comic strips around the themes of the film. We thought about “What would you draw if you had a magic purple crayon?”
Today, Friday, was dress down day for Children In Need. This was fun for all. The children really enjoyed the activities which had been organised by the Ashie House Captains to take part in and We had an assembly on Children in Need before Fun 31.
As part of Winter Festivals IDL work we are creating “Christmas around the world” books for primary aged children which include crafts from around the world. We are excited to start this in our Pairs! We also started to look at different religions and will work towards sharing our own beliefs, morals and values in a respectful way.
Next week, the children will be going swimming on Monday the 18th of November as we missed the last one due to the bus not turning up! Please ensure the children bring their swim stuff, a snack and a drink. This will be the final swimming lesson of P6.
Again, a big thank you to all the parent helpers we have had this term we wouldn’t be able to do these trips without you!

This week we have been learning how to find a simple fraction of a quantity. Everyone did really well! We remembered to divide by the bottom and times by the top when finding a fraction.
We had a great time at the UHI STEM hub on Tuesday. The children were able to apply their learning of both fractions and shape in maths to solve some coding challenges and programme Lego Storm Robots to navigate around a given shape. The children were really competative and worked well in teams to make their robots as accurate as possible thinking aboout perimiter, distance, angles and speed.
The children completed comprehension challenges for the book they are reading and we looked at recounts and how to write quotes in Writing. On Monday, we learned about the origens of Bonfire Night and the Gun Popwder Plot. We enjoyed creating acrostic poems to share our learning. Keep an eye out for these next week.
In PE, the children enjoyed playing basket ball this week. Sadly, the bus did not turn up for swimming so instead we went outside and played some group games on the field.
On Friday, we had an assembly on air pollution for the P4-7 classes and thought about how we can lower the air pollution around the school - one idea was for people not to park on the yellow lines outside the school and to not sit in your car with it idleing.
Star of the week this week is Jackson - Well done Jackson, you have worked really hard this week!
On Thursday next week we are going to the cinema - please send in the £2 with your child if you haven't already.

We look forward to seeing what Lorna has to show us and what we can find out about our school.
In Maths we completed our final assessment for Place value. With Mrs Johnstone we have been practising our division skils and this is something a lot of us find tricky. We learned about two different strategies that we can use: arrays and short division. One of the members in our class said "division is no longer in my panic zone". That's great!
With Mrs Johnstone we have been exploring our strengths and challenges in health and wellbeing. We spoke about our different zones of development: comfort zone, learning zone and panic zone and thought about how we feel in each zone. We realised that everyone has things they feel confidence with but also things they feel worried or stressed about. We started to think of regulation strategies that we could use to help us manage our emotions. You will be able to see some of our learning in our HQAT cogs that came home today. Please have a look at this and complete the home cog before returning to school to be added to our learning journey.

Hello Everyone! We have reached the end of week 2 in P6 already! We have had a great few weeks settling into our new class and developing our routines. We have been working on our class charter and thinking about what kind of class and learning environment we would like to have.
We want to feel ...
We want to see...
It was great to learn more about each other from our all about me bags. We learned that there are a lot of us with things in common that we never realised and so many of us brought in our favourite teddy and family photographs.
