Scottish Civic Trust - My Place Photography Competition 2024
The My Place Photography Competition is a Scotland-wide built environment photography competition for school age young people (4-18). The competition aims to inspire young people to explore and experience their local built environment through photography.
This year's theme is My Community
Take a walk around your local area and pay attention to how local communities use and interact with the buildings, places, and spaces around you!
Community a word used to describe a group of people who have things in common. They might live in the same neighbourhood, go to the same school, attend the same place of worship, do the same sport, or have similar cultural backgrounds.
There are lots of interesting and unique communities in Scotland - show us yours!
How to enter:
All young people aged 4-18 in Scotland are eligible to enter. Entries should be made through our My Place website by a teacher on behalf of their young people.
The deadline for submission is midnight on Sunday 21st January 2024.
Access to ELC & Out of School Club after office hours.
The school office closes at 4.30pm. If the ELC buzzer at the gate is not answered after this time, please phone the school on 01463 230250, select option 2 and you will be able to speak to someone in the ELC/OOSC who will arrange for the gate to be opened for you.

Have a lovely summer and we look forward to welcoming the children to P1.
WE DID IT!
Thanks to lovely family and friends, the amazing netballers and my fantastic class, we have managed to raise over £1,500!
First the netball team did a marathon netball match, which killed off any enthusiasm for netball I think...BUT they persevered and they did it! Then we performed Macbeth the Musical and received a load of very kind donations. We are still doing Africa Fun Fun! Week, and we have gone over the total. The cakes for this are making just as much as the entrance fee, so a massive thank you to all the people who made delicious things.
We are going to work out what the excess is, and try to buy some lightweight equipment for the African school, such as pencil sharpeners (which are apparently like hen's teeth) and pencils, if that is alright with everyone. Any ideas for light things I can carry on the plane with me are most welcome.
Thank you again. I really can't thank you all enough.

Soccer Aid – Thursday 15th June
On Thursday, each class (and ELC) will have the opportunity to take part in Soccer Aid fun sessions led by some of our young leaders and Caley Thistle coaches. Children can come to school in their football strip or sports clothes and bring a charity donation of £1 (if they wish to).
By being part of Soccer Aid for UNICEF we are joining one big team – united by play, so that children everywhere can play. Just like all children should.
Each year group will get the opportunity to take part in some fun, practical games and challenges with the young leaders and coaches . The activities will incorporate the theme of working together to create a shared understanding of compassion, to ensure we are extending it widely to all.
The below films show some of the vital work that UNICEF is doing around the world thanks to donations to Soccer Aid. https://www.socceraid.org.uk/how-your-support-helps/

LOCHARDIL PARENT COUNCIL COMMUNITY AWARD
We are delighted to announce that we will be presenting the 'Lochardil Parent Council Community Award' at the P7 Leavers Assembly on Wednesday 28th June 2022.
Previous winners have included a neighbour who ran a gardening class, members of the Parent Council who also volunteered for a host of activities, a parent who ran all manner of sports activities, and parents who were heavily involved over many years in Parent Council roles. If you have anyone you feel is worthy of this award and would like to nominate, then please email Samantha Grant, Secretary of The Parent Council at Lochardil.Primary@HighlandPC.co.uk by Friday 16th June.
Many Thanks
Lochardil Primary Parent Council
Parking & Road Safety
The Junior Road Safety group have been discussing the introduction of the double yellow lines and the parking situation near our school. We have been made aware by residents and the pharmacy of vehicles being parked on the side of the road, in the staff car park and at the pharmacy. We understand that it is difficult to find parking to drop children off. Please use the drop off zone provided to help support this. We have highlighted below the new traffic regulation order designated by Highland Council at Lochardil Primary School.
Action Taken
Yellow lines have been painted in the streets in and around Lochardil Primary School.
This is all part of a traffic regulation order for pedestrian safety to ensure the safety of children and families travelling to and from school.
New Traffic Regulation Order establishes that:
No waiting on Lochardil Road and Morven Road between 8am – 5pm.
For further information please see the attached Highland Council Prohibition of Waiting Order.
Kind regards
The JRSO Group
Lochardil Primary School
School Uniform Order Forms
Order forms for school uniform have gone home today in pupil school bags. All orders and payment should be returned to the school office by Wednesday 10th May.
Parents/carers are welcome to view samples of garments at the school office and these can also be tried on your child before ordering. (We are unable to exchange incorrectly ordered garments!)
We recommend and encourage the wearing of school uniform by all pupils. We believe it promotes equality, gives a sense of identity and pride in our school and that it is smart and economical. This adds to the sense of community within the school and reduces the need for unnecessary expenditure by parents.
DID YOU KNOW? By ordering uniform directly from the school, the small amount of profit made from these sales goes directly to the school fund to support the education and experiences for pupils.

If the oven is not working, an additional soup and sandwich option will be made available, or a meal may be adapted from an oven recipe (e.g. Lasagne changed to spaghetti bolognaise which can be made on the stove top.

Please find below a message from Thriving families who are leading discussion on the future of Scottish Education. As a parent or carer you have the opportunity to take part in focus groups that will follow on and assist in shaping views on the future of ASL in Highland.
Hello,
We're collating a response for the national discussion on the future of Scottish education and seeking feedback on additional support for learning in Highland. Please help us to lift the voices of children, young people and families in Highland.
We'd love to hear your views so we can collate responses to both Scottish Government and the Highland Council. You can complete our survey here: Deadline for completion: 3pm, Wednesday 30 November 2022.
We will also be holding online focus groups to delve deeper into additional support for learning provision in Highland. This is a great opportunity to get involved and help shape services for children, young people and families in Highland.
You can also enter our prize draw to be in with a chance of winning a £50 Gift4All voucher. Please share this post too.
This first set of questions have a broader focus looking at the future of the Scottish education system. We will feed your responses into our Thriving Families' response to the national consultation. The next questions focus on current additional support for learning provision in Highland. We will produce a report for the Highland Council to inform their review of additional support for learning.
Additional Support - any support provided for a pupil over and above that given to their classmates; that can be anything from support from an assistant in class to giving a child a visual timetable. It can also include support from outside school that is related to a child’s learning, for example occupational therapy providing equipment or advice.
Additional Support Needs (ASN) – where a child needs additional support to benefit from school education. Examples: any kind of disability, being bullied, being particularly able, being young carers, on the child protection register, having emotional difficulties, having experienced a bereavement. This isn’t a comprehensive list, and not all children in those situations will need additional support.
Please note: The terms ASN (Additional Support Needs) and ASL (Additional Support for Learning) are now often used interchangeably. The legislation talks about ASN but in day-to-day practice ASL is generally used.
To find out more about the work of Thriving Families please visit our website (www.thrivingfamilies.org.uk) or our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ThrivingFamilies) . We’re a Highland charity with the objective of being the “go-to” organisation known for supporting and enabling families to improve your lives; by building your confidence, empowering you to recognise your personal expertise and value, know your rights and have your voices heard.
Thank you for your time.

After a long time virtually, we are excited to be able to welcome our parents/carers back into the school buildings for our Open Afternoon on Wednesday 5th October 1.30 – 2.15pm. The focus for learning is Health & Wellbeing, and it is an opportunity to spend time inside your child’s classroom with them.
As a school, for the health & wellbeing of all, we still follow basic prevention procedures for Covid.
PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND THE OPEN AFTERNOON IF YOU ARE DISPLAYING ANY SYMPTOMS OF COVID.
Please enter the school building by the main reception entrance where you will then be directed to the correct classroom. If you have more than one child, you can then move to the next class during this time also.
When in the building please observe a reasonable social distance between adults, and sanitise hands frequently, particularly important if you are visiting more than one classroom. You can wear a face covering if you wish. Windows will be open in the classrooms to support ventilation.
Please remember to sign the attendance sheet in your child’s classroom and share your feedback with us also.
We look forward to welcoming you, and if you are unable to attend on this occasion, we look forward to seeing you at one of our other opportunities over our future terms.
A message below from our JRSO officers following our recent You Matter, Let's Natter meeting regarding parking at drop-off and pick-up times, outside our school.
We are very much looking forward to our Celebration event tomorrow (rescheduled from 3rd September) to recognise our many recent successes and achievements. Our classes will be involved in lots of fun activities and experiences within their classes, and also take part in some drumming workshops or be audience for the performance by the Kakatsitsi drummers who we are welcoming back to our school.
Our achievements we are celebrating include –
- UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Re-accreditation of our Gold award
- School of Sanctuary award status from City of Sanctuary UK, the 1st school in Scotland to achieve this to date
- Digital Wellbeing award for Cyber Resilience and Internet Safety from Digital Schools UK. We are one of few schools across the country to be recipients of all 3 digital awards.
- Our recent HMIe inspection, which was a positive experience for us all but also particularly emotional as it was the 1st inspection in Scotland back after Covid times, and also the last inspection as Her Majesty Inspectorate due to the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Very poignant.
We have a number of invited guests and some members of our Parent Council joining us also. Mr Drew Hendry, MP, raised a Motion in Parliament during the summer to recognise our successes and he will be in attendance tomorrow to present us with this accolade. We look forward to sharing all our photos of our day with you all and continuing our exciting Lochardil learning journey.

Thank you in advance for your support of this local charity.

The Highway Code has recently been updated and our attention has been drawn in particular to Rule 67. (see below).
We are delighted that so many of you are using this mode of transport as both the environmentally friendly and healthy options for travelling, but please remember to stay safe at all times and to be a courteous and safe road user.
From:Department for Transport Published 1 October 2015 Updated:25 March 2022
"Rule 67
You should
look all around to make sure it is safe before moving away from the kerb, when pulling out to overtake or to pass stationary vehicles, or when turning at junctions or stopping.
take care when passing parked vehicles, leaving enough room (a door’s width or 1 metre) to avoid being hit if a car door is opened, and watch out for pedestrians stepping into your path."

Inverness Caley Thistle FC match ticket request form for pupils is now closed.
We are delighted we have a large group of supporters going along to the match tonight with their parents/carers to cheer the team on. Huge thank you to Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC Community Trust for organising and gifting the tickets to us.
For adults still to purchase tickets to go along with their child, tickets will be available to buy up until the game starts tonight and are available from the ticket office at the stadium. Lochardil Primary have an area in the North Stand Section F and this is where all our child tickets have been allocated across a few rows. When buying, try to get an adult ticket for this area/section also. This does mean our children may not sit in the exact seat number their ticket says in order to allow parents/carers and children to sit together. So as long as we are all within this area the seats are all for us.
I will also be sitting in our Lochardil section tonight and look forward to seeing everyone there. So if there are any queries over where to sit etc. I can help.
Remember to display our school values at all times!
Also, we are proud to have shared messages of good luck and support for the team as part of our ongoing school and club partnership work. The children were over the moon to see and hear they have been well received.

We have completed another whole school initiative linked with mental health and wellbeing. We are sharing our learning with our school community and campaigning for our requests to be actioned by the Scottish Government.
Dear Ms Haughey,
We are contacting you as we conclude our work on UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Outright Campaign. The theme for the campaign has been children’s mental health.
Each class has been involved in developing our understanding of who and what helps us with our mental health, our UNCRC rights and what influences our mental health.
We would be delighted if you could use your position as Minister for Children and Young People, to raise awareness of the need to support mental health and wellbeing for children. We have an understanding of the United Nations Rights of the Child and recognise that these articles are now part of part of the law in Scotland.
We wish to speak out and speak up for those children and young people who may need some extra input and support to ensure positive outcomes for their mental health. We know that you can make a difference to so many.
We have created a Powerpoint summary of our learning. We linked the Outright Campaign with Safer Internet Day and Children’s Mental Health Week.
We have shared our work with our school community and appreciate the impact you could make for us with our scope and influence.
Thank you for your support with our campaign.
Kind regards

Wow! We are almost at the end of term 2 already. Only 8 sleeps left until Christmas Day. Today we are hosting another Virtual open day. Please have a look on your child's Google Classroom and Class Blogs as every class has an extra special video to share with you. Also check out some of what they have up been up to this term.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support. We would be thankful if you could take a moment to answer two questions on today's exit poll. Simply click on the links below.
After completing our work on the "Keep My Friend Learning Campaign" in Term 4 last session, we were ready to share it with our local MP. Our aim was to highlight the need for children to continue their right to education (UNCRC Article 28) despite the challenging issues of poverty, gender equality and the pandemic. However, due to a range of factors, we had not been able to that at the time.
We were delighted to meet Mr Drew Hendry this afternoon, to showcase some of our campaign poems, posters, letters and videos from last session. He was very understanding of the issues we raised and encouraged us to keep having a voice for others. He recommended we develop our work by sending him a petition which he could include as part of a presentation he would make in Parliament in due course.
We wish to thank Mr Hendry for his time, interest and support of the school and his enthusiasm for our "Keep My Friend Learning" Campaign.
We were delighted to deliver a few of our crisp packet blankets to the Inverness Foodstuff at Ness Bank Church yesterday. Pam Urquhart welcomed us and has offered to have some of our blankets available to anyone who may in need of them. We appreciate the extra support given to us by some community volunteers to help turn our blankets into Biffy Bags using waste plastic. We have collected hundreds and hundreds of empty packets which we used to make over 15 blankets with. This project has helped to raise our awareness of the potential to turn our waste into something positive. Thank you for all the donations of packets.
Thank you to all our families who ordered some of our Lost Property recently. We received 34 orders. We also set up a "Help Yourself Stall" at the school gate last Wednesday and we managed to pass on a few other items. We continue to ask parents and carers to label all clothing and property taken to school. Please contact the school if you wish to claim any of these jackets.
Please see attached letter from Nicky Grant. Apologies we only received this today.
We have received information from our ladies in the canteen that there is a slight change to the diner options on Monday, due to a mix up in the deliveries sent out. The options for Monday 6th December will now be as follows:
School
Chicken fillet bites, Cheese or Egg sandwich
ELC
Salmon Nibbles or Cheese sandwich
Parking around the school
Unfortunately this week we received a complaint regarding inconsiderate parking in our school vicinity. As a school community we recognise the challenges faced during drop off and pick up times at the school, and continue to actively work on improvements in this area with our pupils, staff and community members to ensure our Lochardil area is safe for all. We promote active travel where possible, and are very grateful to everyone for usually being mindful when having to drive and park.
However, a recent incident involving use of ‘abusive and inappropriate language’ from one of our users was reported to the police as a result, so we are asking that everyone is a responsible driver and adheres to the Highway Code i.e. no parking across driveways, avoid obstructing the main passing of traffic on the road, and use of any marked parking bays appropriately for quick drop off and pick up with no idling, so this does not affect the accessibility of customers using the local shops.
Please remember we do have disabled bays within the school staff carpark for eligible users, and also have school permits, for users that require short term support if required. If this is needed contact our school office for assistance.
Over the years, we have built up a very good relationship with the local community and appreciate their support. Please respect this and be courteous at all times. Most importantly we must keep all our children safe in and around the school campus, and thank you for being a safe road user. We are all positive role models for our children at all times.
Many thanks
IMPORTANT INFORMATION - All parents/carers
With winter upon us and the risk of spreading viruses, coughs & colds etc on the rise, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the measures to take if someone in the household is required to go for a PCR test.
The following is taken from the most recent Highland Council Position Statement issued to schools:-
Any adult or child who develops symptoms of Covid-19 (high temperature, new continuous cough or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste) must self-isolate immediately in line with NHS guidance. People living in the same household, for example any siblings, must also isolate while awaiting the outcome of the test result.
Any adult or child who tests positive using a Lateral Flow Device (LFD) must self-isolate immediately and book a PCR test within 48 hours to confirm the result. People living in the same household, for example any siblings, must also isolate while awaiting the outcome of the test result.
When reporting absences, parents/carers are asked to mention if their child is going for/awaiting a PCR result and to notify the school of the result when received. This also applies when leaving a message on the automated absence line.
We appreciate everyone’s support and the continued reinforcing of the importance of hand washing & sanitising and the wearing of face coverings by adults on the school premises.
Mrs A Kellacher
Head Teacher
The JRSO team and parent council at Lochardil Primary School have an exciting active challenge for you this term! In the weeks leading up to Christmas we want to challenge our pupils, families and staff to clock up the miles and “walk” all the way to the North Pole! This a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the positive impact that an active school run can have on our health and wellbeing, while also ensuring that we are doing our best to look after and care for our environment.
What do you need to do?
We are asking all of our Lochardil Families to take the opportunity to walk or cycle to and from school this term, whilst also recording the number miles of your journey takes. Recording your journey miles could be achieved using a step counter app on a mobile device or using Google Maps to determine how many miles your journey will be.
We are also looking to use our journey to the North Pole event to raise money for our school fund so we can invest in some new and exciting resources to support our fantastic learning at Lochardil Primary. Therefore, we would ask that pupils seek sponsorship in order to support their 2247-mile walk to the North Pole. Every little helps and each penny we can raise will make a huge difference towards exciting resources and equipment for our school!
All forms and monies to be returned to the school by Monday the 20th of December. You should have received a sponsor form home with your child/children this week.
We also ask that you take photos of you taking on this challenge . These can be saved in the Parent Council google Drive or they can added to this assignment post using the add or create button. We hope to make this into a lovely video that we can share with you just before we break up for Christmas!
Happy Trekking!
Miss Munro :)
See attached poster.
Enrolment for P1 session commencing August 2022 will be Monday 31st January 2022 to Friday 4th February 2022 and ELC enrolment is Monday 14th February 2022 to Friday 18th February 2022. Enrolments will be online and further detail will be released.
Pupil Flu vaccination catch up clinic - Thursday 25th November - CANCELLED
We have just received this message from School Health.
Due to unforeseen circumstances the flu clinic has been cancelled for tomorrow at the Highland Council car park behind Eden Court Theatre. If you have an appointment to bring your child along then please do not attend as there will be no staff.
We have been delighted with the response to our COP project. We are now bringing it to a close for the moment, as we catch up with some more processing of washing and ironing a huge amount of empty packets.
We are hoping to donate a few of our blankets to one local charity and will be able to send some away to other charities too.
We appreciate the help of some friends in our community who have created "Biffy bags" using our packets and waste plastic. These are like huge sleeping bags and will provide some extra protection and warmth.
TESCO are now collecting "soft plastics" and all crisp packets can now be donated there for recycling.
Thank you for collecting and donating your empty packets.

Thank you for helping to make this Christmas special for those in need.
See menu below to discuss lunch choices with your child each day.
The next parent council meeting is to take place on Wednesday 17th November 2021 at 7pm via the google classroom. The link will be posted on the classroom on the 16th November 2021. All parents and carers are welcome to join online.
This Friday, 29th October 2021, all children can dress down, or dress up in fancy dress, as we will not be able to host a Halloween party in the evening, like we have done in previous years. It would be wonderful if children could manage to donate £1 for school fund and if they can, also bring an item of food or beauty/toiletry product to donate to our Community Hampers, which was extremely successful last year.
Please ensure that the white envelope that came home with you child is returned by tomorrow 27.10.21. Thanks in advance.

After such a fabulous summer holiday we are all ready and excited to welcome all our children and families back to school tomorrow and looking forward to our new session 2021-2022 ahead!
We have a couple of changes that have occured over the summer including –
P3B are now lucky to have Miss Rachel Sutherland as their class teacher for the year;
P3/4 will still have Miss Lisa Graham as their class teacher until 1st September then a new teacher will be appointed to the class. This is such an exciting next chapter for Miss Graham as she moves on, however she will be greatly missed and we look forward to her popping back to visit when she’s back in the Highlands. This post has been advertised and the closing date set for 23rd August so we will share further information as we have it.
Miss Chloe MacDonald (P6/5 class teacher & Principal Teacher) & Miss Jenny Scotson (P7B) will be supporting work relating to COP26 education development in Highland, as well as being class teachers. Ms Emma Donsophon will be covering their classes for a short time each week this term and next and details will be shared through class overviews.
We also welcome Jackie Gardiner to our team for this session on a Wednesday and every alternate Thursday covering our Principal Teacher management time so she will also be working with P1, P6/5, and P7A.
We are now ready to welcome back our fabulous Lochardilites in the morning! Polite reminder, all Covid mitigations remain in place as our previous session, so please leave your children at the gate and do come in to the playground with them. They should all know where they are going and if not there will be members of staff in the playground ready to help.
So… enjoy the last few hours of the holidays, pack the school bag, set the alarm, and get a good night sleep all ready for the fun that lies ahead tomorrow as we embark on our new school year journey 2021-2022!
