Talk for Writing

The students have been learning 'The Farmer Duck' story from memory. Have a look at their performance, actions and all! They have also started introducing their own characters and writing their own version.

Sports Day and Soccer Aid

Last week was a very sporty one. We had out Sports Day on Thursday afternoon and on Friday we raised money for UNICEF Soccer Aid, by participating in football activities.

Week 8: Making (Pretend!) Poo Experiment

This week the students learned all about our digestive system and made some poo! Pretend poo I might add!

Over the next few weeks the students will be revising instructional writing skills and writing the steps required to carry out the experiment. Today the students followed these instructions:

Week 7

This week we celebrated the Queen's Jubilee in a number of ways.

Jubilee

Every class investigated on of the Commonwealth countries and  decorated the door with it's flag  as well as finding some facts about the country.  Our country was Grenada! This was followed with a Royal walk around the school looking at all the decorated doors.

Celebrations

We also had out big picnic lunch outside in the glorious sunshine. Thanks to the canteen staff for organising this.

In the afternoon we had a QR scavenger hunt which was ran by Ruthven House.

I hope you all enjoyed your own celebrations over the weekend.

Week 6: NYCOS

Today we had a special visit from Christopher from the National Youth Choir of Scotland.  It was a lovely music session where we learned about 'hitting the correct notes!' Everyone had the opportunity to sing their names solo!

Week 5: What do our kidneys do?

Last week the students experimented with a cloth filter and some fake blood (water and paint!) and rice to demonstrate what the kidneys do.

It was a great fun experiment to simply describe their important function in our bodies. Please look for these videos on our virtual open morning slides!

Week 4: Our Sense of Sight

Week 3: 'We are all Wonderful' Wednesday

Each student got a piece of paper and wrote their name at the top, then they passed passed their paper to someone else.

As the paper arrived they wrote something kind about that child then passed it to the next student along until every one has written something kind about everyone in the class.

Once they get their own paper back they  sat and read all the lovely things that their friends have said about them.

Term 4, Week 2: Learning about our Skeletons

Today the students worked with life size parts of a skeleton.  Without any teaching they had to work together to do their best to fit all the parts correctly together. Tomorrow they will labelling each part. Some new words they learned today were the scapula, clavicle, tibia, fibula, ulna, femur, ulna and radius!

Term 4 Week 1: Speed Skip Counting

This week, as part of their mental maths warm up,  the students worked in table groups to practise their skip counting.  In groups, they each had to say the multiples from the 3 and then 4 times table. Once complete they had to quickly sit down! Perhaps you could play a version of this at home or on car journeys.

Week 13: Heartstone Exhibition

This week, we were invited to a walk through session showcasing the Heartstone Exhibition.  Here the students got to view and appreciate the work of the P6/5 class who had been learning about Global Issues through the book they read in class called Heartstone.

Week 9: World Book Day 2022

It was a rather quiet World Book Day today with only 6 students in the classroom but we still managed to celebrate our love of reading by connecting with everyone else who was isolating at home. You all looked fantastic dressed up as your favourite book characters.

Internet Safety Day and Mental Health Week

Last week was busy!  It was Mental Health Week and Tuesday was Internet Safety Day.

The class created support balloons after watching a short media clip about the importance of having someone to talk to if and when they are feeling down.

For Internet Safety Day they designed their own set of rules on how to stay safe when online and created posters.

Week 6: Jiggling Jelly!

This week we are continuing our work on instructional writing.  Making jelly in small groups today will help the students write a great set of instructions on Thursday morning.

Over the last few weeks they have been developing their understanding of  what makes a good set of instructions. Using success criteria has helped the students make sure they are including all the features necessary.

Week 5: Multiplication Arrays

This week we started to look into multiplication.  We will be focussing on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

We started today with arrays.  These are an  important tool when teaching multiplication.  The students worked in pairs to create different arrays to for the two times table.

An array shows that, when multiplying two numbers together, the order of those numbers can be switched around.

By way of an example, let's take a look at two arrays: 2 x 4 and 4 x 2 . If we look at the array for 2 x 4, it's made up of 2 rows of 4. The 4 x 2 array is made up of 4 rows of 2.

As their times table knowledge grows they will begin to understand how many different arrays can be created for different numbers.  For instance, the number 24 can be represented as 24 x 1, 1 x 24, 2 x 12, 12 x 2, 3 x 8, 8 x 3, 4 x 6, 6 x 4.

Week 4: Deconstructing an Instructional text

This week the students familiarised themselves with a set of instructions these had used before the holidays.  They then had to identify the features of the instructional text.  After this they cut, ordered and labelled each of them.

They are now ready to have a go writing their own set of instructions next week.

Celebrating Burns Day

On the 25th of January the students learned why Scotland plays tribute to Robert Burns, and found out about his influence not just in Scotland but across the world.  They looked great wearing a touch of tartan to school.

Week 3: Dictionary Racing

Today the class were working on their dictionary and spelling skills through the Dictionary Race Game.  Using their knowledge of the alphabet, their understanding of how dictionaries work as well as their spelling knowledge, they worked in pairs to 'race' to find the word.

Term 3: Spelling Common Words

This term we have shaken up the way we are learning our high frequency or common words.  Everyone will be given an individualised list of six words that they will be working on for two weeks.  Each morning the students will rotate in groups around different tables.  The tables have been set up to target a range of learning styles: visual, auditory, tactile and kinaesthetic.  We will using the pipe cleaners, books from the library, magazines, magnetic letters and any other resources we can find to learn  these words in new and interesting ways.

Have a go at home! Can you take learning your spelling in a completely different way? It could be chalks outside, writing your words in the air using giant arm movements, writing on the bath tub with bath crayons, getting crafty with glitter and glue, hunting for words in magazines and cutting them out... The list is endless!

Week 8: Party Time

Today was our Christmas party. We celebrated in style with pass the parcel, best girl and best boy dancer, musical statues and musical bumps. There was lots of dancing and lots of snacking in between too!

Week 7: Christmas Lunch and Christmas Craft!

Some of our money from the Parent Council was spent on crafting materials.  We were able to make these gorgeous snowmen. I am sure they will be a lovely addition to your decorations at home. Thank you to the Parent Council!

Christmas lunch was also a highlight of the week. Some discussions afterwards proved the pigs in blankets were a firm favourite!

We also worked on revising some 3D-shapes and learning some new ones.  We built our own using nets.

Week 6: Directional Language and Angles work

This week the class were introduced to angles and directional language like left, right, quarter and half turns, clockwise and anticlockwise.  We discussed the definition of what an angle was and then found out about the different angle types - right, acute and obtuse. They also learned about compass points and some fun rhymes to remember their order.  After this we explored simple grid references and managed to identify features on a map using them.

Next week we hope to create our own maps using Plop the owl's bird's eye view and write some list our own directions using grid references and directional language.

Week 5: Subtracting Tens BINGO!

This week the class exercised their number fact knowledge and practised using the 100 chart to subtract in tens from 2 digit numbers.

This is a great game that can be played at home if you have enough family members!

The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark Art Work

The students have been creating their very own flying owl.  Using a paper plate as a starry night background, they made owl puppets which can soar high in the night time sky!

Bonfire Night Art

The students used wax crayons to create a dramatic fireworks scene then painted over their picture using watered down black paint to create the illusion of a dazzling, whiz popping fire display.

Week 2: Kodaly

Over the last two Mondays, the class have had Kodaly sessions with the lovely Rosalind.  The class have enjoyed learning new songs through games. Below are some videos of them in action.

We look forward to the future lessons planned with Rosalind in class and via Google Meet.

Rubric for Boat design P3

Week 1 (T2): Creating and designing a boat fit for Arctic Exploration

During the last week of term the students of P3B used their knowledge and understanding of the properties of materials to design a boat that would be able to float on water and carry a heavy load. Using the success criteria (above) and only recycled materials they set to task. The designs were all very unique.

On the first day back after the holidays they tested their boats and reflected upon what worked well, what didn'y and why and how they could improve their design.

Week 8: Measuring in Maths

P3B had lots of much fun measuring the real length and heights of different Artic animals using metre sticks outside last week.  Not only did they practise the skill of using a metre stick to measure lengths longer than a metre but they also gained some new knowledge too. The class learned:

A VERY special thank to Mrs Beattie for the use of these fabulous Maths resources! A hit lesson!

Week 7: Growth Mindset

Growth Mindset and Art Lesson inspired the picture storybook The Dot, by Peter Reynolds

As part of Health and Wellbeing, we have been thinking about being positive in our learning, trying things even if they are difficult and not giving up. We call this having a growth mindset. After discussing the terms fixed and growth we read the picture book The Dot. This book is about a little girl who to begin with thought she couldn’t paint, but with the support and encouragement of her teacher, she realised she could and she ended up creating her own art gallery of dots.

While  reading The Dot we identified situations where Vashti (character in The Dot) had a fixed or growth mindset.  The students used a closed fist to show when the character was using a fixed mindset and an open fist to show when she used a growth mindset.

We then discussed different language we could use to help us have growth mindset.  Finally the class drew and wrote about a time when they had a growth mindset just like Vashti.  The following day we used different art media to create our own gallery of dots.

Fact...

Over the last couple of weeks, P3B have been working on spotting whether a statement is fact or an opinion.

A fact is something that can be proven to be true or to have actually happened. An opinion is based on what someone thinks, believes and feels. Opinions can change and can not be proven.

IMG_0173.MOV

or Opinion?

The activity generated lots of great discussion.

'But polar bears are cute! That is true!'

'But can it proven?'

'Does everyone agree with this statement?'

The class then worked in groups to read and sort other statements about polar bears as fact or opinion.

What is a global citizen?

Early on in the term the students watched and then discussed this lovely picture book 'Is this my home?' It helps children understand the concept of being a global citizen.

They then drew their own interpretation of what a global citizen was. Check out the video!

Week 4: Artwork

We read the book Leaf by Sandra Dieckmann. It is a moving story of a community coming together to conquer challenge and fear. It also explores the impact of climate change and our own impact on the world around us.

...inspired by the picture storybook Leaf Sandra Dieckmann

Leaf is a beautifully illustrated book.  Some of the pictures prompted us to investigate the Northern Lights.  After watching a video clip of the Northern Lights, they used chalk to recreate the scenes with Leaf the polar bear in the forefront.

Week 3: Identifying Materials

This week the class became familiar with the terms 'natural' and 'human- made' or 'manufactured'. After making some predictions we used a dictionary to discover the real meanings of the words.

They then sorted each of the materials into the two different categories. We found that paper and glass, although human made, started from natural resources.

The lesson ended watching some video clips of how glass and silk were made.

...and sorting them.

The next lesson focused on learning about the properties of materials.  The class learned what an adjective was and used this knowledge to describe each material. They worked collaboratively in their table groups, moving around the class recording their words about each material.

Please excuse the poor quality of the photos below. Issues with converting HEIC files to jpegs.

Roll and Write with our Class Wizard!

You may notice our class wizard is a little familiar. Some of the students spotted him straight away.

We have been growing his beard to grow our knowledge of common words! The students write their spelling word as many times as they can on his beard and roll the strip of paper up to make a curly strand of hair.

Choosing a 'Good Fit' Book

P3B spent the first two weeks of school week learning to choose a 'good fit' book.

Sophie M and I swapped shoes only to discover hers were not a good fit for me and mine were not a good fit for her. We can think of choosing books this way too. A book you might like might not interest a friend. A book that you pick up might be too tricky to read but easy for someone else. You may understand your book easily but not everyone may do so so easily.

It's important to use the IPICK strategy when we choose a book for Read to Self.

I...

P - Purpose. Why do I want to read it?

I - Interest. Does it interest me?

C - Comprehend. Can I understand it?

K - Know. Do I know most of the words? (5 or more per page is not a good fit!)

Week 2: Read to Self

Last week and this week the students have been practising the skill of Read to Self. We spent time unpacking what this would look like in the class and together drew up our very own anchor chart.

Here are some photos of them reading to themselves and building their stamina with reading independently.

Week 2: Read to Someone

Read to Someone is all about sharing a book together.  Again the superstars of P3B practised this and learned the EEKK song (see above).  Ask them to sing it to you when you next share a book at home!

Our first week as P3B!

The students of P3B have had an amazing first week.  They've shared news about their holidays, found out what'WOW' words are, discovered what 'comprehension' and 'stamina' means, graphed their birthdays, used Google Earth to explore where they were born, considered their rights, learned some new Maths games, practised how to choose a 'good fit' book and more!

It was an action packed week and unfortunately we did not manage to finish some of the tasks mentioned above. Some are also going to be ongoing so keep your eyes peeled for future posts about these!

For now I will leave you with some photos of the table groups and P3B tackling their first piece of writing - holiday postcards!
