On Monday we welcomed a team from Scottish Ballet to visit our school. They did a short interpretive performance for us in the morning which we all really enjoyed and then in the afternoon we got to take part in a fun movement workshop. We played some movement games focusing on strength, position and performance and then got to choreograph our own short routine using some of the moves we learned. We were all very excited to learn and practise a lift with our partners. The workshops really made us look forward to going to see the professionals in action on Thursday.
In maths we learned a bit more about pie charts in data handling. We had to recall some of our knowledge of fractions and percentages to create simple charts from frequency tables of data. Some of the groups began to explore using digital tools such as Excel or Sheets to create pie charts using the information we had gathered from our class surveys last week. We have also really enjoyed taking part in the Highland Sumdog Contest this week. There has been some healthy competition between the P5, P6s and P7s on the leaderboard. With Mrs Cameron, we continued our work on time by looking at timetables. We discussed when we might see timetables like trains, planes and buses. They then completed some work on reading timetables.
In literacy this week, we have developed so many skills. Writing was based on our IDL work on Antarctica. Last week we learned about Earnist Shackleton and his Endurance expedition. This week we reminded ourselves of his story and began to create our own descriptive accounts of the expedition, focusing on quality description, imagery and upleveling sentences. We used a model text to help us get started and substituted some of the text for our own descriptions. We will continue to work on this next week. Mrs Johnstone was very impressed at everyone’s efforts. You can see what we have done so far on Google Classroom. Before writing our pieces we brainstormed some good imagery sentences and descriptions to share with each-other using a padlet. Check them out here: https://padlet.com/chloemacdonald1/antarctic-descriptions-p3amuoz2b9at73fq
With Mrs Cameron we continued with our Champions of Antarctica programme. Last week we made a table of the sounds we heard on the soundscape for Antarctica and what we saw. We compared this to our school grounds. This week we have started to write “A day onboard the ship to Antarctica”. The children are doing really well with this. We are concentrating on using descriptive words and editing our work. We have also been creating posters for reading. These are to show that we have understood what we have read and are also looking at the techniques the author is using in their writing. We have also been comparing and contrasting two different sources in the group reading Generation Hope.
On Monday we had lots of fun learning and translating some common Scots language words. It was really interesting to find out not only what the words meant but we also found out that depending on the dialect and area of Scotland you are from, words can have a few different meanings or pronunciations. We picked our favourite songs and translated the chorus into Scots.
Thank you to everyone who brought in their favourite books from home this week. It was great to share our favourite authors and stories with each other and inspire our friends to find some new authors and books that they may enjoy. All children have been asked to remember to have a personal reading book in school every day. This may be a book chosen from home or from the school or class library.
We visited Eden Court on Thursday afternoon to watch “The Snow Queen” ballet.
“Scottish Ballet’s spectacular and much-loved production of The Snow Queen returns to the stage, after its hugely popular tour in 2022.
This glittering production is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale – which was also the basis for Frozen. Set to the music of Rimsky-Korsakov which will be performed live by the full Scottish Ballet Orchestra.
From the bustle of a winter’s market to the shivers of a fairy tale forest, take a journey to the Snow Queen’s palace, where you’ll find her surrounded by the icy fragments of an enchanted mirror. Along the way you’ll meet a colourful cast of characters, from young lovers parted by a spell to a circus ringmaster with a few tricks up his sleeve.
Choreographed by Christopher Hampson and designed by the award-winning Lez Brotherston, this story of love and friendship is sure to delight the whole family”.
Thank you to all the parents who came along with us to help and also to all the parents who offered their help, we do really appreciate it!
Stars of the month are - Casey, for trying hard in class and being a responsible and confident member of P6.
Alice K, for her hard work on her literacy skills even though she finds this tricky. Her perseverance and dedication to her school work.
Well done to you both!
We say farewell to Mrs Anfield today and wish her a very happy retirement. I know we will all miss having her in our class and school!
This week has been a busy one. We have delved into our Champions of Antarctica project work. We have been watching videos of a soundscape of Antarctica. We listened and described what we heard and saw. We braved the ice cold winds on Thursday and went outside to do the same activity, here at school and spoke about the differences and similarities between the two places. This has really sparked the interest of the children and the scenery on the videos is just stunning! With Mrs Johnstone we read a story about Ernest Shackleton who was an explorer who traveled to Antarctica. He is known for his adventures during several attempts to reach the South Pole. We learned about his Endurance expedition of 1914. He planned to cross Antarctica. However, his ship, the Endurance, became trapped in ice before it reached Antarctica. The ship then drifted for 10 months before being crushed by the ice. Shackleton was able to rescue all of his men who returned home safely. We really enjoyed hearing about a true story and because of our work on Champions of Antarctica we were able to really visualise and understand the conditions in which the expedition took place.
In Maths with Mrs Cameron, we have been working on story problems and also converting 12 hr time to 24hr time. With Mrs Johnstone we started to look at data handling. We learned about the features of bar graphs and practised using frequency tables to gather information before recording on a graph. We created our own survey and frequency tables and visited classes throughout the school to gather our data. On return to class we used our data to construct our own bar graphs and tried to remember to include all the key elements including an appropriate scale, x and y axis, titles and labels and accurate and even bars. We really enjoyed this. Some of us began to explore pie charts. We think they are going to be a little bit trickier than bar graphs because we need to remember fractions, percentages and division skills too.
We have been working on our skimming and scanning skills in Reading and continued our tasks for spelling. We joined a live online webinar from author Iqbal Hussain about his book titles, The Night I Borrowed Time. Iqbal spoke about how he gets his ideas for his characters and read some inserts from his book to the children. This gave us some inspiration and ideas to apply to our own writing. If anyone would like to read his book, copies can be purchased from all Waterstones bookshops and from www.waterstones.com . Mrs Johnstone is going to order a copy of the book for our class too. We also took some time this week to focus on proof reading and editing skills. We used our reading skills to help us identify missing punctuation within a paragraph. Mrs Johnstone had missed out all the punctuation so the paragraph made no sense! Thankfully we managed to fix it by applying our knowledge of full stops, commas, capital letters, speech marks and apostrophe’s.
This week is the Scottish World Cup Ceilidh Week. SATPE (Scottish Association of Teachers of Physical Education) and RSCDS (Royal Scottish Country Dance Society) have put together some resources to celebrate Scotland’s journey to the World Cup finals and to tie in with upcoming Burns Night. They have renamed some of the most popular ceilidh dances after Scotland players, including both traditional and non traditional music options and have also created new moves based on football skills and players. We had a great time, in PE, giving these dances a go. You can check them out here: SATPE-RSCDS-WORLD-CUP-PACK-1 (1).pdf
We are looking forward to our Scottish Ballet workshop next week and our trip to Eden Court on Thursday.
This week our star of the week is - Molly, for all her hard work in Maths and for being a great member of our class.
This week has been a busy week.
We have started our learning on time this week and how important it is to our everyday lives! We started our new spelling routine. In IDL we started our Champions of Antarctica 2041 journey. This included and introduction to Antarctica and then a childs trip to Antarctica. The children really loved this! They were able to answer lots of questions about this. We also filled in where the different oceans are on a map and looked at where Antarctic is and how big it is!
We have begun writing a diary entry at the end of each week about what we learned in school and what they did out of school! I have enjoyed reading them all!
We started our new reading books after we had predicted what we thought they might be about. We read some pages and then worked on our summarising, skimming and scanning skills to write about what we had read so far.
Star of the week this week goes to Mathew for being so hard working and conscientious about his work. He has also shown great perserverance and responsibility this week! Well done Mathew.
Happy New Year to everyone!
What a couple of days we have had this week! The snow has been exciting for all the children!
In these first few days of term 3, we discussed our holidays and wrote a Diary entry of our Chritmas holidays. We are concentrating on checking for punctuation, spelling and editing our work.
We finished our postcards for the Outright campaign which will be sent to the Foreign Secretary of International Aid asking for more money for International Aid. This is the end of our Outright topic.
We also completed our pre assessment for time in Maths.
For our class assembly we learnt about Martin Luther King for Martin Luther King day on January: 15th 2026. We completed a piece of art for this. We also have been discussing our rights and will continue to do this weekly.
A letter has been sent home for our trip to Eden Court, please make sure the permission slips come back next week.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend and keep warm!
Please click on the Term 3 Overview Title or the embedded document below to access our overview for this term.
We have had a great final few weeks of term 2. WE have been very busy rounding off our learning and tying up loose ends before we go on holiday.
We had great fun at our Christmas Party and really loved doing our final paired reading session of the term with P2. They were inspired by our persuasive letters to the Grinch to write their own letters. They came to our class to share their writing and we went to theirs to read them the story of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. It was a great coincidence that on the same day The Grinch and Santa visited our playground!
We hope you like your Grinch inspired Christmas cards which we designed to look 3D using effective shading with oil pastels. We created 2026 calendars which helped us to visualise our goals, hopes and highlights of the year ahead.
Thank you very much for all the generous cards and gifts that were given to both the teachers and PSAs, it is very thoughtful and greatly appreaciated. We hope you have a wonderful holiday with those you love.
This has been a busy and exciting week!
We have been continuing to practise our persuasive writing skills with Mrs Johnstone. We read the story of How The Grinch Stole Christmas and put all our learning from our HQATS into action by writing persuasive letters to The Grinch, persuading him that Christmas isn’t as bad as he thinks. We tried to empathise with the character, thinking about why he may have the opinions he does and shared some of our own thoughts and feelings too. We thought about “things that make our heart grow” and make us feel happy, loved and safe. We wrote the letters in our jotter then practised our touch typing skills by re-drafting them on our Chromebooks.
On Monday we had an art teacher visit us and did some paper craft. We used different coloured paper to make snowmen pictures, thinking about size, shape, colour and texture. We have enjoyed pairing up with P2 the last 2 weeks to do some paired reading. This not only supports the young readers in P2 but helps us to develop responsibility and confidence too.
On Wednesday afternoon, we enjoyed welcoming you all to our classroom and we could see that the children showed pride in their work whilst showing you all around the classroom and corridors.
We continued to work on our outright campaign looking at how international aid being reduced is affecting children's rights around the world and how children are being youth advocates for international aid and their rights.
In writing we continued with our advert work which we enjoyed sharing and starting with you all on Wednesdays open afternoon. We also finished off our outright campaign writing.
In Maths we completed our post money assessment and worked on a Christmas co-ordinates activity.
In reading we are still looking at inference and have started to write our own pieces of inference. This is a tricky task!
In spelling we have started to do dictation as a whole class. This helps with writing speed and also we can work on our handwriting as well as our spelling and editing skills.
Star of the week this week is - Lucas for trying hard even when he found it tricky! Well done Lucas!
This week we have been really busy finishing of our work. In writing we have continued with our childrens stories and how international aid has helped them and their communities. We have been looking at how climate change affects childrens rights and are creating posters in IDL for our Outright Campaign. We watched a live lesson on Friday morning from Antarctica and how climate change is affecting it. The children really enjoyed this!
We have been collecting lots of pupil voice so the children have a voice in class and the school. In maths we continued with money, we wrote a christmas list with prices and then they got given a budget and had to work out what they could afford. We also looked at worded story money problems which are tricky!
In reading we have been looking at inference, first we had a class lesson on how to infer from a picture, then we tried to draw a picture and the other children had to guess what they thought we were infering. This was fun!
Next, we have started to look through our story books looking for how the author has used inference. Next week we will write our own piece of inference on a given picture. This is a tricky thing to do!
Next wednesday 10th of December in the afternoon from 1.45 - 2.30pm we have our open afternoon, which we invite you all to come and see our work. I know the children are looking forward to welcoming you into our classroom.
Letters went home this week with what the children should bring for our christmas party on the 17th of December. If you would like to bake the cakes you can however they need to list all the ingrediants used and there muct be no nuts. No nuts must be brought into school.
We have had a busy, but lovely week this week.
Star of the week this week is Roxy for all her hard work in class and being kind and respectful. Well done Roxy.
This week we have been learning about how international aid has helped children and communities in different countries in our OUTRIGHT topic. We have also been giving our pupil voice on how we have felt about this.
In reading we have been working on summaries and using the 5 W’S(what, where, why, when and who) within them to make them better. We have written our own for the book we are reading.
In maths we continued to work on profit and loss with an active blether station task. We looked at 3d Nets and how to work out a shape’s net. We also worked on addition and money.
In writing we finished out HQAT persuasive writing pieces and worked on our pupil cogs and next steps.
Star of the week this week is Aaron for his improved effort and concentration in class and being a caring friend. Well done Aaron!
We have had a busy week this week. The snow brought lots of excitement as did Scotlands Victory!
In Maths with Mrs Cameron, we have been looking at the parts of a circle and how the diameter relates to the radius. We also learnt how to find the full circumference from a giver quarter. In money we looked at the costs, benifits and risks of haveing cards. The children thought of lots of reasons.
In reading we have been working on identifying and finding Similies, Metaphors and Personification. We had a go at writing our own too!
We watched a live lesson on the Outright campaign from UNICEF for world childrens day on Thursday. This gae the children lots of figures and facts about international aid and where the UK spends it. We were all surprised that it is now 0.3% which goes to International Aid from the UKs budget. We learnt that International Aid has meant that over 1 billion children in different countries have had immunisations! Also that 90% of the worlds children now go to school. This lesson will help us with our Outreach topic we are currently doing.
In Writing the children continued with their OREO writing for their HQAT in persausive writing.
It is road safety week this week so we learned about road safety and then completed some posters for the slogan "speed down, save lives".
We had a celebration assembly and our two stars of the month are: Stella and Eliza for always working hard, being respectful and great members of our team. Well done girls!
We had an amazing time at the cinema this week watching the new Snow White Film. We will be looking at bullying and how Snow White was bullied as it is Anti Bullying week this week. We had great fun on Friday for Children in Need. The P5 class held a bake sale at break and then had some stalls for the children to go to in the middle of the day. This included nail painting, mini skateboards, hula hoops, colouring, t shirt designing and pin the clothes.
We continued with our reading books and completed tasks for these. We continued money looking at budgeting and creating our own budget for a christmas meal. We also looked at Quadrilaterals.
In IDL we continued with Outright and looked at the vocabulary to do with International Aid and all made a poster of these.
Star of the week this week is: Alise for all her hard work and always helping to tidy the classroom. Well done Alise.
This week has been another fun week with Bonfire Night on Wednesday. Did you go to see the fireworks or did you stay cozy at home? The children enjoyed creating line drawings of popular Inverness landscapes, skylines and locations this week with Mrs Johnstone. We spoke about different types of line and perspective in art. We also learned about the history of Bonfire Night and the Gunpowder Plot. Some of us were surprised to learn about the related conflicts and links to royalty and parliament.
We have completed a pre assessment for Money, in maths, as we will be learning about Shape and Money alongside each other this term. We continued to look at the properties of 3D shapes and looked at the vocabulary involved - Vertices, Faces, Edges. With Mrs Johnstone we have been practising using a protractor to measure angles within shapes and identify which type of angle they are (acute, right, obtuse, reflex, straight). We enjoyed searching our classroom for different angles and measuring angles in the real world.
We completed a “cold task” for persuasive writing this week. A cold task is a piece of writing done before we learn about the writing style and techniques. This helps our teachers to see what skills we already have and where we need more support or practise. This term we will be focusing on developing skills in persuasive writing using the OREO structure (Opinion, Reason, Evidence, Opinion) to help us form our arguments. In Reading this week we have been working on our comprehension skills and learning to skim and scan the text to find the answers. This is a hard skill which the children have tried really hard with this week.
As part of our Global Citizenship learning, we have started to look at the UNICEF Outright 2025 campaign. OutRight is a campaign by children and young people, for children and young people. Children will follow an exciting campaign journey, learning about children’s rights and how to take action. This year, OutRight will follow a journey through which children and young people develop their understanding of their rights, international aid and why it is an important part of being a global citizen.
Children will develop their knowledge of:
Relevant children’s rights and the UNCRC
What international aid is and why it is important (using climate change and education as examples)
How to use their voices on international issues that matter to them and their community, by contacting decision makers.
More information about the campaign can be found here https://www.unicef.org.uk/rights-respecting-schools/resources/teaching-resources/outright/
This was the last week of swimming. Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered and came along to support us at swimming. Without you we would not be able to go!
Swimming has been great fun and all the children have represented the school very well! We have been very proud of each one of the children! Well done to you all!
Out Star of the week this week is: Bethan - for trying really hard with her work even when she found it hard! Well done Bethan!
Welcome back everyone!
We have had a great start to term 2!
On Monday we worked together to find out more about the digestive system before our visit to UHI STEM HUB on Tuesday. Mrs Johnstone introduced us to the angles family. Check them out.
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1EJTvKojEkRuzKe3VtKK45XgucoFZdi4UcdD7ZSX0Ru8/edit (embed link to slides on blog post - I can do this if you are unsure how to )
We enjoyed this and found it a great way to remember the different types of angles which we will be working more on this term.
We had such an interesting day at UHI stem hub on Tuesday learning all about the different systems in our bodies. We learned about the digestive system which is in charge of processing all our food and drink; the respiratory system which is in charge of our breathing and our lymphatic system which is part of our immune system. We learned about different job roles in Health Science including : a doctor, a surgeon, a lab technician and an oncologist. We got to dissect a real pig's lung which looks similar to a human one.
On Wednesday we talked about what we will be learning in shape this term. We got into our spelling groups and found words using the dictionary and then chose our spelling words for homework this week.We started to write a spooky halloween story and wrote predictions on what we thought our new reading book might be about.
Mrs Johnstone really enjoyed seeing everyone at the fancy dress disco on Wednesday night. There were some brilliant costumes.
On Thursday in maths we did an outdoor shape hunt, looking for the different 3D and 2D shapes in our outside environment.
On Friday for our class assembly this week we had discussions on the book 'Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah', for Black History Month.
The key points from this were -
it was written by Benjamin Zephaniah and tells the story of a 10-year-old boy called Leonard.
In 1958, Leonard travelled with his mother from Jamaica to England to join his father. The novel follows Leonard as he struggles to adapt to life in Britain.
Although it is a fictional story, Benjamin Zephaniah was inspired by historical events when he wrote . He also drew on his own experience of growing up in Britain in the 1960s
For homework this week the children will be drawing their own family tree which shows who they are. Thinking about - What is your ethnicity, heritage -who are you?
We have had a busy week this week and the children have settled back in really well.
Star of the week this week are -
Koen for working really hard this week, a great first week back, well done Koen!
Wow! We have made it to the end of term 1 in P6 already! We have enjoyed another action packed week of learning and fun in P6 this week. On Monday we had a change in our routine and had PE with Ms Barclay. This was due to the open morning being during our usual PE slot on Tuesday. We enjoyed a little bit of friendly competition in dodge ball and bench ball.
In maths - we have been learning about square and cube numbers with Mrs Johnstone. We learned that a square number is the product of a number multiplied by itself and a cube number is the product of a number multiplied by itself 3 times. Did you know you can make squares out of square numbers? Ask us how! With Mrs Cameron we completed our pre assessment for shape and then we did some maths journaling on what we already know about shape and what we’d like to learn about shape.
In Literacy - The children enjoyed the opportunity to do some creative writing with Mrs Johnstone, on Monday. They got the choice of two story starters and were given the challenge of continuing the story. It was very interesting to see the different perspectives, themes and characters that emerged. Some children have even been asking to work on their stories at home. This was the first piece of writing that the children got to use their chromebook to type so it was extra exciting. We learned a little about Google Docs and what the red and blue lines under words mean and how it can help us. We worked on finishing our creative stories, our Palindromic poems and reading posters at the end of the week.
In IDL this week - We tried some foods that are traditionally grown or eaten in Syria. This learning opportunity was inspired by the main character in our class novel “The Boy at The Back of The Class.” who is a Syrian refugee. We tried:
Pomegranate
Figs
Dates
Apricots
Hummus & Pita Bread
Falafel
Some children were really surprised that they liked some of the foods which they didn’t expect to like. The pomegranate and the hummus were the most popular choices.
We also finished off our Brothers across Borders comics and finished the simulation. We finished the refugees welcome letters and artwork too.
We really enjoyed having so many parents and carers coming in to visit on Tuesday morning. Thank you! The children loved showing off some of their work and sharing their learning with you. There were some great discussions around different types of bullying, regulation strategies and support networks.
Stars of the Month
Well done - Coralie for her hard work in class and always being kind and respectful!
Well done - Fraser for always working hard, contributing to the class and being kind and respectful.
Well done to our cross country team! The boys team won 2nd place overall. The team included: Liam and Calum in our class. Calum came 2nd in his race! Well done boys!
We had a lovely last day in school, we made our own superheroes relating to a chosen global goal and we had to decide what their super power would be. We then went swimming. After lunch we had a disco with an online session with a gladiator and then we had a football session with the Caley Thistle coaches. It has been a wonderful term and I'm looking forward to next term.
We hope you have a fantastic October holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 27th October.
Mrs Johnstone & Mrs Cameron
We look forward to welcoming all of you who can make it to join us for our health and wellbeing themed open morning on Tuesday this week between 0930 and 10:15. Following on from our learning around online safety and cyber bullying we will be talking part in a range of activities discussing different types of bullying and mental health.
This week we enjoyed Math Talk Time. This activity encouraged us to use our maths language that we know, extend on our current maths vocabulary, find mathematical links in the world around us and open up mathematical discussions in the class. Check out some of our recent Maths Talk Time responses. We completed our post topic assessment and also started our Maths Journaling. The children wrote about how they feel about maths and what they feel they are good at and what is tricky for them.
We learned about Palindromes in literacy with Mrs Johnstone. A ‘Palindrome’ is a word, sentence or phrase that reads the same forwards and backwards. We read the poem "Refugee" by Brian Bliston. This is an example of a mirror poem or Palindrome Poem as you can read it both forwards and backwards but the meaning or interpretation of the poem changes. The purpose of this is to get people thinking. We are working on creating our own poems about something we have a strong belief about. We are creating a plan using a template on our chromebook then writing it out on paper with our best handwriting. In reading we were looking at inference and answering questions about different photos.
We had an amazing time at Lochardil woods on Thursday afternoon, even though it rained the entire time! The children made some amazing dens and showed real leadership, team working and determination skills throughout. We spoke about how it would feel to have to be in this overnight or during a storm! The children then collected water from their tarps as this would be another problem to solve if you did need to find shelter and you had nothing with you. This has all linked into our Refugee topic. A big thank you to our volunteers and Ellie Carlisle. Also a big thank you to anyone else who did offer to come along, without you we cannot do these things with the children.
We are very proud of each and every one of the children throughout this topic with their maturity and respectful attitudes shown when discussing some very mature topics.
We have had a really busy week this week, We hope you all have a lovely weekend!
Star of the week this week is : Emilia for her brilliant leadership skills when we were doing den building! Well done Emilia!
You are invited to join us for our Heath and Wellbeing themed open morning next Tuesday 6th October any time between 0930 and 10:15.
This week has been a busy one! We have been working hard on staying safe, strong and smart online. The children have all been doing really well with this and will be sharing some of their learning with you next week as their first HQAT coming home.
We have also been enjoying maths week and the theme of “wild maths”. We entered the national Sumdog competition and are enjoying keeping an eye on the leaderboard to see how we are progressing. We took part in an online lesson from Ellie Carlisle from Nature Scot. Ellie has been working with the P7 children to collect data and map features of our outside areas. This is looking at how eco friendly our school is and how we can improve. This session showed the children how important maths is in the world of work. We learned about a mathematician called Fibonacci and a special number sequence that he discovered: 0,1,1,2,3,5,8… Can you spot the pattern? We found out that this pattern can be seen in nature and we created our own “golden rectangles” with Fibonacci spirals.
We have been focusing on a new skill in our reading, working on clarifying what we have read in our books and in writing we have started to use our notes and research to write biographies on our chosen famous refugee. We have continued with creating our Brothers across borders comics in IDL, which the children are really enjoying.
This week we have been really busy in class!
On Wednesday afternoon we have Nichola in from Jacobs to complete a STEM lesson with the children about what equality, equity and removing barriers are. Nichola is a Transport Engineer for Jacobs and she looked at the butterfly effect with the children, (https://steam.jacobs.com/butterfly-effect/human-rights/ ). They got into groups of 3 and acted out the different scenarios and then they had to try to draw themselves when they were equal to others, when they were equitable to others and when all barriers were removed for them. This led to some good conversations in class.
On Thursday morning we had our online stay safe and strong webinar. This was looking at how to stay safe online! This webinar spoke about - How their phone grabs and holds their attention
•
The pressure they may feel to be online
•
What cyberbullying might look like
•
Banter vs bullying
•
The impacts of social media and bullying
•
How to stay safe
•
How they can build a positive online space
This is going to be part of our High Quality Assessment Task this term. The children then looked at our own Lochardil school ‘Acceptable Use Policy’ and the children identified areas which they think are important and thought of new items they would like to add.
In Maths we continued with Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000 and the children completed a dominoes matching activity. We also completed our Maths SOFA this week.
In Reading we continued with our books and had different tasks to complete.
In Writing we continued with our plans for our Biographies on a famous refugee, ready to start writing these next week.
Star of the week this week is - Ellis for all her hard work and determination to get her work finished! Well done Ellis!
We have had a very busy week this week! Wow! We are at the end of week 4 already! The children have all worked really hard over the last four weeks and are looking forward to the long weekend coming up.
This week, in reading, we continued to work on creating a well structured summary of what we have read. We read more of our class novel and we completed a comprehension task on this to demonstrate our understanding and find information within the text. In Maths with Mrs Cameron we have been learning about multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 and with Mrs Johnstone we took our maths outdoors this week to review our learning on place value. Children enjoyed creating giant place value charts in the front playground and took part in some friendly competition to identify number values using natural resources and round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
In IDL this week, we started a new interactive activity called “Brothers Across Borders”, an interactive movie set in Syria and Turkey. In an engaging and capturing fashion it shows the living conditions of people who are affected by the conflict in Syria and the choices they have to make. It combines visual story telling with game play which is based on multiple choices. This enables the children to “experience” the life of a Syrian refugee as the journey takes them to real locations in Syria and Turkey and lets them choose how to proceed. This Red Cross resource aims to challenge the children and encourage them to be curious, ask questions and reflect. The aim is to increase the understanding of the situation for people who are asylum seekers and refugees as well as inspire action by the students to help and support fellow human beings. Children will be making a comic book that shows the choices they made and the impact their choices had on the character’s life. All the children have been having in-depth discussions about the choices they make and are enjoying the activity.
In digital skills this week, the children are continuing to enjoy practising touch typing with Mrs Johnstone. This week, we were learning the letters that are above the “home row” and how to “jump” our fingers from our home keys. It is getting a little tricky but we are enjoying the challenge.
The children have created some beautiful pieces of “hand in hand” artwork that demonstrates the themes of humanity, no discrimination and love. The children chose quotes to add to their artwork that resonated with them. Here are some of our finished pieces.
Swimming is going really well. Thank you to all the volunteers again as without you we wouldn’t be able to go.
Our stars of the month this month are:
Ava - for her resilience, hard work and love for everybody.
Megan -- for always being respectful, kind and hard working.
Well done to you both! It is always a hard decision as all the children are doing really well.
This term in P6, the children are very excited to have got their own personal Chromebook devices. In class we are supporting the children to explore resources and information online, and develop an understanding of responsible digital behaviour, learning how to keep themselves safe and secure . As part of this learning, on Thursday 18th September, our class will be watching an online webinar delivered by Kooth Digital Health, a company who provides an anonymous, online counselling and emotional wellbeing service for young people aged 10+.
During the Webinar: “Staying safe, strong and smart online”, our young people will explore:
•How their phone grabs and holds their attention
•The pressure they may feel to be online
•What cyberbullying might look like
•Banter vs bullying
•The impacts of social media and bullying
•How to stay safe
•How they can build a positive online space
We have had a great first few weeks back. We have done a lot of getting to know each other and getting settled into our classroom routines. Everyone has loved getting their new chromebooks. Swimming has been great so far and everyone is enjoying it!
With Mrs Johnstone, We started practising touch typing. The children were amazed that Mrs Johstone could type without looking. We have been learning about the home keys. Some people managed to type with their hands covered. It was lots of fun.
As part of our IDL topic, we are working on creating a piece of art inspired by our class novel “The Boy at the Back of The Class”. We are drawing hands holding each other, showing the theme of welcoming and no discrimination. We had lots of great discussions about ways we can make people feel welcome and included and had some great discussion around some very grown up themes including racism, prejudice and discrimination.
We have started our new reading books in our groups and have written a summary of what we have read so far. We have also been continuing to work on place value in class.
For IDL we designed a small shelter on paper in groups or individually and then we went outside on Thursday afternoon and built them. They were AMAZING! We are so proud of all the children. They worked on their team working skills, problem solving and thinking outside the box! We have been talking about Refugees and how children come to our country to be safe, and how they are still children and still want to play and have friends and be included just like we do.
We have started to research famous refugees and will be writing an information report on them in writing. We found lots of people who we never knew were refugees.
The children have settled in really well and we are having lots of fun. Swimming is going great!
Week 1 Louis for his brilliant effort and behaviour in class.
Week 2 Maeve for trying really hard and persevering when things get hard.
Week 3 - Zainab for being a great member of the class, working hard and being very respectful.
Well done to you all!
