Tae a Thistle
While learning about Scottish history we created art of two national flowers of Scotland and England - the thistle and the rose. Inspired by the Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh, we used watercolour and fine liner pen to add details and a quote from Robert Burns. We experimented with colour mixing to add shade and tone to our work and took our time to work on each flower.
We are getting quick with our recall of times tables. We can use our knowledge of times tables to show our thinking and quickly write the fact family for each table. We can represent multiplication in different ways and have enjoyed playing strategy games to practise with partners.
Writing skills
In our grammar lessons we have been learning to use inverted commas for direct speech. We have been practising what we have learnt in our own writing. We loved using macaroni to see where we needed to add speech marks and remembering to "burst the speech bubble and pop the full stop" for a comma.
We loved visiting P1 again to spend time reading together. Primary 4 listened to the P1s reading their reading books and then chose picture books to read together. The P4s were very supportive of their P1s, asked very good questions and didn't want the time to end - definitely a few future teachers in this class!
This term we are focussing on our imaginative writing. Using the Talk4Writing approach we "feature spotted" a model text and then used story mapping to retell the narrative. We found it tricky to think of symbols for some parts of the story but with practice we were able to retell most of the story- with lots of details.
This term we are focussing on multiplication and division. We will be practising our times tables and building our understanding of multiply and divide. We started by reminding ourselves how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s and making equal groups. We have been making arrays with cubes and enjoyed playing "array battle" with a partner. Help at home by asking us to count on and back and practising times tables in and out of sequence.
Primary 4 and Primary 1 have paired up to read together. P4 were very impressed with the primary 1's reading their reading books and then they read their buddy a picture book and talked about the story. We are looking forward to more shared reading in the new year.
Using foam and cardboard we made our own printing tiles. Then we used the roller to add ink to the tile and pressed our print on to paper. we made several prints from our tiles. We enjoyed the process of designing our tiles and then creating the image we wanted. We realised that we didn't need to use too much ink on the tiles or the print would smudge. We are going to try this again with a repeating pattern.
As part of our IDL learning on forces, we have been investigating magnets. We can explain how magnets attract and repel different materials and have used this to create our own magnet mazes. We have had fun trying to navigate each others mazes. Some of the magnets in our classroom are stronger than others - it has been fun to see what they will stick to!
We have enjoyed working with fractions. Using playdough we have split a whole in to equal parts and have been using the correct mathematical vocabulary to halves, quarters, thirds, fifths etc. We can explain that a fraction is part of a whole and that the parts must be equal. Ask us to show you our learning. We have been challenging ourseves with finding fractions of an amount.
Poppy fields
Thinking about Remembrance Day, we created our own poppy fields using watercolour. We used mixing and blending to created the background. We demonstrated patience as we waited for each stage to dry before adding the details. While waiting we read books for enjoyment and listened to instrumental music. We found painting slowly relaxing!
Experimenting with friction
We carried out an experiment to learn about friction. We talked about a "fair test" and only changing on variable, we decided to change the surface to see what would happen to how things move. Using a plastic numicon we slid it across carpet, a table, a wet surface and on the floor. We discovered that the smoother the surface the easier the numicon moved, the rougher the surface the slower it moved or even stopped. We know that friction is a force that stops objects from moving.
Primary 4, primary 3 and 3/4 were lucky to watch Scottish Opera perform the story of the Harp. We took a journey through history and around the world to listen to the beautiful sound of the harp. We recognised some familiar music as well as the excitement of hearing opera performed live by the performers. It was great fun joining in with actions and even some singing responses.
We started our forces and magnets learning by using playdough to investigate how push, pull and twist forces work. We realised that a force can change the shape, direction and speed of an object. We learned that we cannot see forces but we can see the effect a force has. we are looking forward to more experimenting this term!
Here is the learning overview for Term 2 for Primary 4.
Wake up shake up!
We have been stretching and moving to keep ourselves focussed as the days get a little darker and the weather isn't quite so nice outside at break and lunchtime.
Moving helps to keep our brains active, gives us a break from working and get ready for the next lesson.
Rangoli patterns
We have been learning about Diwali and made our own rangoli patterns using shapes. We explored how patterns could be symmetrical or not, how to tesselate and repeat a pattern and thought about the colours we were using too.
Spooky selfies
We enjoyed using charcoal pencils and oil pastels to create our own spooky selfies. We talked about shade and tone and exaggerating features for a cartoon style of portrait. Some of them are quite terrifying!
Inspired by the Lorax, we have created our own "guardians of the forest". Our wonderfully imaginative creatures have come to life in our writing. We created a non-chronological report about our creatures to share where they live, what the eat, what they look like and how they behave.
We have been working on our mathematical talk. We are learning to question each other, explain our thinking and give reasons for our answers. We have been using sentence starters to help us phrase our answers and Mrs Drummond is always asking us to "prove it" or "show me how you know".
We have been enjoying dictionary races to find words using our knowledge of alphabetical order. We are remembering to look at each letter in turn when finding a word and to look at the definitions for the one that fits our sentence. We are getting pretty speedy at using both the illustrated and Primary Dictionaries.
Ask us about the weather in French. We have been practising how to say what the weather is like "aujourd'hui" (today). We made fortune tellers to practising ask about and saying what the weather is. Our favourite phrases are "il fait chaud/il fait froid" and "il pleut".
Inspired by the artist Yayoi Kusama and the world of Dr Seuss, we created our own abstract flower art. We used mixed media and collage to combine wax resist paint background with a pen and crayon flower. We think they look very effective and enjoyed adding patterns of circles to our flowers.
We have been learning about the weather and how it affects our environment. We explored climate zones and weather. We enjoyed being weather forecasters, recording the weather around the world and presenting this to the class. Using imovie, we turned our weather reports in to short films.
Finding our Zen in a busy day. We have been using Yoga adventures with Cosmic kids to stretch and breathe on our busy days.
We have been reminding ourselves of place value, playing maths games and creating numberlines. Ask us to explain place value, to order numbers to 1000 or to show you how we know which number is greater than another.
Working in groups, we talked about how we wanted our classroom to look, sound and feel. We thought about our rights and which rights would be most important to us in our classroom. We have agreed to respect one another, always try our best, listen and value everyone's voices and to have fun together this year. 🙂
As we are learning about caring for our planet and reading The Lorax, we created art to depict climate change. We talked about what climate change is and thought about what impact it has. We used watercolour paint to create the Earth and practised blending colours to create lighter and darker shades and tones. We are proud of how our work turned out.
We have been making the most of the wonderful weather. We took our maths outside to practise ordering numbers and creating numberlines. We had fun throwing our paper planes and measuring to see how far they had flown. Then we placed ourselves in order - we used our place value skills to work out where we should stand.
Welcome back everyone!
I am delighted to share our Primary 4 blog where we will share updates and photos of our learning in class. 🙂
